Just exactly who is David M. Rubenstein?
That’s what many Baltimoreans are wondering these days, even though the 74-year-old multi-billionaire, lawyer, investor, author, TV host and philanthropist is a Charm City native who has maintained a high profile over the decades.
But now, Rubenstein will likely become the majority owner of one of Baltimore’s most celebrated and cherished traditions — the Orioles. A consortium led by Rubenstein, co-founder and CEO of The Carlyle Group Inc., has agreed to buy the the baseball franchise for a reported $1.725 billion.
In light of that recent announcement, Maryland Public Television will air a one-hour block of programming to help viewers get more familiar with Rubenstein.

The half-hour MPT special “In Person with David Rubenstein” — which originally aired in 2021 — will be presented on Thursday, Feb. 15, at 7 p.m., chronicling his rise from son of a Jewish postal employee to Baltimore City College student to White House aide to billionaire global investor.
Featured will be Rubenstein and former Maryland Secretary of Commerce R. Michael Gill for a one-on-one discussion about Rubenstein’s upbringing in Northwest Baltimore, his search for the right career and the keys to his success.
“In Person with David Rubenstein” is also available to stream on-demand for free using the PBS App and MPT’s online video player at video.mpt.tv/video/in-person-with-david-rubenstein-ch8oqs/.
The broadcast will be followed at 7:30 by a premiere of the latest episode of the PBS weekly series “History with David Rubenstein.” Through in-depth conversations, Rubenstein illuminates the work of some of the nation’s most renowned scholars and public figures, as well as the subjects of their scholarship.
In this episode, prizewinning author Marie Arana joins Rubenstein to discuss the history and heritage of Latinos, the nation’s fastest growing and least understood community.
Previous episodes of “History with David Rubenstein” are available to stream on-demand using the PBS App and MPT’s online video player at video.mpt.tv/show/history-david-rubenstein/.
Both “In Person with David Rubenstein” and “History with David Rubenstein” will be available to watch on MPT-HD and the MPT live stream, which can be found at mpt.org/livestream and on the free PBS App.
