SUMMARY:THE HEIDI CHRONICLES at Vagabond Players
DESCRIPTION:Before hashtags and headlines\, there was Heidi—searching for connection\, purpose and a place in a rapidly changing world. This spring\, Vagabond Players brings Wendy Wasserstein’s THE HEIDI CHRONICLES to the stage\, directed by Lee Conderacci in her Vagabond Players debut. \nIn this sparkling and oh so relevant comedy\, art historian Heidi Holland and her friends travel from the 1960s through the 1980s making life-changing choices relating to dating\, mating and career paths. Will the brilliant and perceptive Heidi find the partner of her dreams? Do “women’s libbers” consider Heidi’s decision about having a child to be a betrayal? Can Heidi attain the fulfillment that she—and millions of other women—fought for? \nWinner of both the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play\, The Heidi Chronicles remains a sharp\, insightful and deeply relatable look at friendship\, feminism and the search for meaning and continues to serve as a reminder of what’s been accomplished and how much remains to be achieved. \nTHE HEIDI CHRONICLES runs April 10 – May 3\, 2026\, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. And check out a special “Thursdays on Broadway” performance April 30 at 8 p.m.

SUMMARY:Goucher Exhibition to Tell WWII Story of Amsterdam Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Baltimore photographer Phyllis Arbesman Berger’s powerful new exhibition\, “Onderduiker: Hiding in Plain Sight at Amsterdam’s ARTIS Zoo during WWII\,” will be presented at Goucher College’s Rosenberg Gallery\, 1021 Dulaney Valley Road in Towson\, from Apr. 26 to May 28 (Onderduiker is the Dutch term for a person in hiding.) \nThe exhibition tells the harrowing story of the Jews\, resistance fighters and young men who escaped forced labor and owed their lives to the staff at the ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo during World War II \nUsing infrared photography and lyrical poetry\, Berger explores the psychological landscapes of the individuals who daily lived in constant fear. Nazi soldiers loved the zoo and visited daily\, not realizing that people were in hiding a wall away. Images and text chronicle the struggles of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances as they spend time with their memories\, take flight with imagination\, and experience longing\, grief and at times terror. \nLocated near the Jewish neighborhood of the Jodenbuurt\, ARTIS served as a hiding place for 200-300 men\, women and children\, all of whom survived during their time in hiding. The zoo stayed open throughout the war\, and Onderduikers spent months\, even years\, hidden behind the scenes of animal enclosures in kitchens\, attics and stables. \nPhylllis Arbesman Berger\nThis setting — with its peaceful paths\, sculpture gardens and inventive architecture that served as hiding places — provides the stage for telling the stories of the Onderduikers. The photographs and poetry in this exhibition are informed by conversations with the ARTIS Zoo historian\, the former director of the zoo (an Onderduiker himself) and groundskeepers during visits over the past seven years. \nThis exhibition is a collaboration between the artist and students at Goucher College\, whose research and writing provide a foundation for understanding the historical context of this work. \n\nOpening Reception: Apr. 26\, 3-5 p.m.\nArtists Talk: Apr. 26\, 3:30-4:30 p.m.\nCurator’s Tour: May 23\, 1-2 p.m.\n\nFor information\, visit goucherartgalleries.com/exhibitions. \n

SUMMARY:Benefit Event to Raise Funds for Cancer Research
DESCRIPTION:Friends\, neighbors\, patrons and members of the Baltimore’s community will gather on Thursday\, Apr. 30\, from 3-7 p.m. for a special Cancer Benefit for Patrick\, the beloved owner of The Avenue Kitchen & Bar\, at 911 W. 36th Street in the heart of Hampden. \nFor years\, Patrick Dahlgren has been far more than a restaurateur — he has been a pillar of the community\, a friend to many\, and a constant source of generosity and support for those around him. Now\, after a difficult two year battle with cancer\, the community he has long served is stepping up to support him in return. \nThe benefit event will feature beer\, wine\, specialty cocktails\, appetizers\, music and raffles\, with a $40 donation requested to attend. A portion of the proceeds will also benefit the Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center and its cancer research efforts. \nFunds raised from the event and additional donations will help offset the overwhelming medical and care expenses Patrick continues to face\, allowing him to focus on what matters most healing and recovery. \nThose unable to attend in person are encouraged to contribute through the accompanying GoFundMe campaign and to share the fundraiser with others who know Patrick and wish to help (https://gofund.me/f1bdffb77). \n

SUMMARY:A Rosenberg by Any Other Name: Jewish Name Changing in the 20th Century
DESCRIPTION:Our images of name changing are frequently clichés: movie stars who adopted new names or Ellis Island officials who changed immigrants’ names. \nKirsten Fermaglich\, Professor of History and Jewish Studies at Michigan State University\, upends these clichés by examining previously unexplored name change petitions. \nIn twentieth-century New York City\, thousands of ordinary Jews legally changed their names to respond to institutionalized antisemitism. While name changing allowed Jewish families to achieve middle-class status\, the practice also became a source of family pain and community stigma.
