SUMMARY:Goucher Exhibition to Tell WWII Story of Amsterdam Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Baltimore photographer Phyllis Arbesman Berger’s powerful new exhibition\, “Onderduiker: Hiding in Plain Sight at Amsterdam’s ARTIS Zoo during WWII\,” will be presented at Goucher College’s Rosenberg Gallery\, 1021 Dulaney Valley Road in Towson\, from Apr. 26 to May 28 (Onderduiker is the Dutch term for a person in hiding.) \nThe exhibition tells the harrowing story of the Jews\, resistance fighters and young men who escaped forced labor and owed their lives to the staff at the ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo during World War II \nUsing infrared photography and lyrical poetry\, Berger explores the psychological landscapes of the individuals who daily lived in constant fear. Nazi soldiers loved the zoo and visited daily\, not realizing that people were in hiding a wall away. Images and text chronicle the struggles of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances as they spend time with their memories\, take flight with imagination\, and experience longing\, grief and at times terror. \nLocated near the Jewish neighborhood of the Jodenbuurt\, ARTIS served as a hiding place for 200-300 men\, women and children\, all of whom survived during their time in hiding. The zoo stayed open throughout the war\, and Onderduikers spent months\, even years\, hidden behind the scenes of animal enclosures in kitchens\, attics and stables. \nPhylllis Arbesman Berger\nThis setting — with its peaceful paths\, sculpture gardens and inventive architecture that served as hiding places — provides the stage for telling the stories of the Onderduikers. The photographs and poetry in this exhibition are informed by conversations with the ARTIS Zoo historian\, the former director of the zoo (an Onderduiker himself) and groundskeepers during visits over the past seven years. \nThis exhibition is a collaboration between the artist and students at Goucher College\, whose research and writing provide a foundation for understanding the historical context of this work. \n\nOpening Reception: Apr. 26\, 3-5 p.m.\nArtists Talk: Apr. 26\, 3:30-4:30 p.m.\nCurator’s Tour: May 23\, 1-2 p.m.\n\nFor information\, visit goucherartgalleries.com/exhibitions. \n

SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Goldie Morgentaler\, Editor\, "Letters from the Afterlife: The Post-Holocaust Correspondence of Chava Rosenfarb and Zenia Larsson"
DESCRIPTION:Edited by Goldie Morgentaler\, PhD \nTranslated by Krzysztof Majer and Sylvia Söderlind \nLetters from the Afterlife chronicles the experiences of two Holocaust survivors as they adjusted to life in their adopted countries of Canada and Sweden. Chava Rosenfarb (1923 – 2011)\, Goldie Morgentaler’s mother\, and Zenia Larsson (1922 – 2007) were childhood friends in Poland\, lived through the Lodz Ghetto and the death camps together\, and parted soon after their liberation from Bergen-Belsen. For the next fifty years\, they continued their friendship through letters written in Polish. Despite their continuing traumas and insecurities\, Rosenfarb and Larsson went on to become distinguished novelists in their respective languages\, Yiddish and Swedish. \nAfter Chava Rosenfarb’s death\, Morgentaler found a stash of Chava’s letters to Zenia from 1945 to 1971. By bringing Chava’s letters together with Zenia’s side of the correspondence\, taken from the book Zenia published in Swedish in 1972\, Morgentaler has created a testament to an emotional attachment between two women writers who had suffered through some of the most horrific events of the twentieth century and emerged with their humanity and ability to love intact. \nGoldie Morgentaler is Professor Emerita at the University of Lethbridge\, where she taught 19th-century British and American literature and modern Jewish literature. She is the translator from Yiddish to English of much of Chava Rosenfarb’s work\, including Rosenfarb’s epic Holocaust trilogy\, The Tree of Life: A Trilogy of Life in the Lodz Ghetto. \nAbout the Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series: \nThe Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series is sponsored by Debs Weinberg to honor her mother Sandy’s love of books and learning about Jewish women’s lives. \nVisit https://bit.ly/HBIConversations for more information.
