SUMMARY:Goucher Exhibition to Tell WWII Story of Amsterdam Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Baltimore photographer Phyllis Arbesman Berger’s powerful new exhibition\, “Onderduiker: Hiding in Plain Sight at Amsterdam’s ARTIS Zoo during WWII\,” will be presented at Goucher College’s Rosenberg Gallery\, 1021 Dulaney Valley Road in Towson\, from Apr. 26 to May 28 (Onderduiker is the Dutch term for a person in hiding.) \nThe exhibition tells the harrowing story of the Jews\, resistance fighters and young men who escaped forced labor and owed their lives to the staff at the ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo during World War II \nUsing infrared photography and lyrical poetry\, Berger explores the psychological landscapes of the individuals who daily lived in constant fear. Nazi soldiers loved the zoo and visited daily\, not realizing that people were in hiding a wall away. Images and text chronicle the struggles of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances as they spend time with their memories\, take flight with imagination\, and experience longing\, grief and at times terror. \nLocated near the Jewish neighborhood of the Jodenbuurt\, ARTIS served as a hiding place for 200-300 men\, women and children\, all of whom survived during their time in hiding. The zoo stayed open throughout the war\, and Onderduikers spent months\, even years\, hidden behind the scenes of animal enclosures in kitchens\, attics and stables. \nPhylllis Arbesman Berger\nThis setting — with its peaceful paths\, sculpture gardens and inventive architecture that served as hiding places — provides the stage for telling the stories of the Onderduikers. The photographs and poetry in this exhibition are informed by conversations with the ARTIS Zoo historian\, the former director of the zoo (an Onderduiker himself) and groundskeepers during visits over the past seven years. \nThis exhibition is a collaboration between the artist and students at Goucher College\, whose research and writing provide a foundation for understanding the historical context of this work. \n\nOpening Reception: Apr. 26\, 3-5 p.m.\nArtists Talk: Apr. 26\, 3:30-4:30 p.m.\nCurator’s Tour: May 23\, 1-2 p.m.\n\nFor information\, visit goucherartgalleries.com/exhibitions. \n

SUMMARY:Washington National Opera Presents West Side Story
DESCRIPTION:Experience the Leonard Bernstein\, Stephen Sondheim\, Arthur Laurents\, and Jerome Robbins classic on a grand scale. \nLove divided by a turf war… chemistry that sizzles… tragedy that looms. When four of the greatest American icons of the 20th century took on Shakespeare’s story of star-crossed lovers\, it became a Broadway blockbuster. Now\, the story and spectacle of West Side Story meets the scale and power of opera for a retelling you won’t forget! \nArtistic Director Francesca Zambello’s “expansive” (Chicago Tribune) production follows young lovers Maria and Tony as tensions rise between the Sharks and the Jets. Your favorite musical moments are here—from the tender “Tonight” to the enduring “Somewhere”—performed by a world-class cast and the Washington National Opera Orchestra. \nWith dazzling original Jerome Robbins choreography set on the streets of New York and “thrilling injections of dynamism and adrenaline” (Chicago Sun-Times)\, this West Side Story gets the starry treatment that only Washington National Opera can offer. West Side Story is a co-production of Houston Grand Opera\, Glimmerglass Festival\, and Lyric Opera of Chicago. \nThe performances\, a centerpiece of WNO’s landmark 70th Anniversary season\, will feature accompaniment by the Washington National Opera Orchestra conducted by internationally renowned Marin Alsop\, Music Director Laureate of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (May 8-9)\, and Grammy Award®-nominated James Lowe (May 10)\, with the original choreography of Jerome Robbins. \nIn English with Projected English Titles. \nPerformances 5/8/2026 at 7:30 PM\, 5/9/2026 at 2:00 PM and 7:30 PM\, 5/10/2026 at 2:00 PM

SUMMARY:Life Review: The Hospice Musical
DESCRIPTION:A musical comedy about love\, loss\, and the lives of hospice patients. One night only. Live musicians. Live album recording. \nWhat is Life Review? \n“Life Review: The Hospice Musical” is a new American musical about life and death in a hospice facility — and it’s a comedy. Created by Benjamin Kintisch\, a Cantor and hospice chaplain from Columbia\, MD\, it follows a young rabbi navigating his first year as the new chaplain at a residential hospice. \nAudiences have laughed\, cried\, and called it life-changing. \nFans have described it as “funny and poignant\,” “Broadway-worthy\,” and “the most human show I’ve ever seen.” It has performed at the Asheville Fringe Festival\, the Charm City Fringe\, and virtually from London — and it is a 2025 Maryland State Arts Council Creativity Grant recipient. \nWhy May 9 is special \nThis is not just a performance — it’s a live album recording. For the first time\, the full 16-song musical will be performed by a complete ensemble featuring five conservatory musicians from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University\, under the direction of Music Director and Orchestrator Kieran Casey. \nEvery song. Every character. One unforgettable night. \nWhat to expect \nAn intimate 90-minute evening of original songs\, humor\, and genuine heart. Characters drawn from real hospice patients and the people who cared for them. A Broadway-caliber performance in a 140-seat theater. A room full of people who will leave thinking differently about life\, legacy\, and what we want to be remembered for. \nFollowing the performance\, there will be a dessert reception. For those who want to discuss the work\, there will be optional small group discussions related to topics highlighted in the show. \nGroup choices include the following: \n1) “Spoiler alert!” – Dark humor and our shared mortality. \n2) “Send Me a Sign!” – Theological Issues at End-of-Life. \n3) “With These Hands” – the blessings and challenges of the body through aging and illness \n4) “Life Review” – an interactive story telling workshop. \nTestimonials: \n“It was beautiful\, your singing was touching and moving along with your acting. It was spot on! I cried. We all loved it!” — Audience member \n“I feel grateful to have experienced Life Review. The lessons taught through song I will carry with me for the rest of my life.” — Cassandra Geisel\, Lifting the Lid Festival\, London \n“Ben Kintisch masterfully captures the nuance and humor of one of humanity’s greatest blind spots — end of life care.
