SUMMARY:BSO Music Presents: Shostakovich Symphony No. 8
DESCRIPTION:Shostakovich sustained a quiet resistance against the brutal oppression of the Soviet Union under Stalin\, burying his objections under fastidious layers of symphonic elegance\, as heard in the wartime Eighth Symphony. Music Director Jonathon Heyward excavates the endlessly revealing layers of this modern masterpiece. The Trumpet Concerto from Shostakovich’s protégé Mieczys?aw Weinberg (a.k.a. Moisey Vainberg)\, featuring BSO’s Principal Trumpet Andrew Balio\, leans on this Polish-Jewish musician’s family roots in Yiddish musical theater. \nThe June 8 concert is a part of the Casual Conversations series. Please note: the program does not have an intermission. \nArtists\nJonathon Heyward\, conductor\nAndrew Balio\, trumpet \nRepertoire\nWEINBERG Trumpet Concerto\nSHOSTAKOVICH Symphony No. 8 \nFeatured soloist BSO Principal Trumpet Andrew Balio is the holder of the Harvey M. and Lynn P. Meyerhoff Chair

SUMMARY:Third Space at Shaarei Tfiloh to Hold Launch Event June 9th
DESCRIPTION:Come to the launch event of Third Space at Shaarei Tfiloh\, which bills itself as “a place for gathering and a gateway to meaningful engagement and community\, grounded in Jewish culture and learning.” \nBased at the historic Shaarei Tfiloh Synagogue at  2001 Liberty Heights Avenue near Druid Hill Park\, the nonprofit’s launch will be held from noon to five. (Details will be forthcoming.) \nIn 1996\, Shaarei Tfiloh Synagogue\, located near Mondawmin Mall and The Maryland Zoo\, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. (File photo)\nKnown to generations of Baltimore Jews as “The Shul in the Park\,” Shaarei Tfiloh operated as an Orthodox congregation from 1921 until last September. \nThe synagogue\, designed by architect Stanislaus Russell\, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. It appeared in Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson’s 1999 film\, “Liberty Heights.” \nGatherings and experiences at Third Space at Shaarei Tfiloh will be intended to “inspire\, foster reflection and deepen connections to heritage and community\,” according to the organization’s website. \nAreas of programming focus will include holidays and seasons\, arts and culture\, adult learning and community events. \nThird Space “reimagines the space as a new\, non-denominational\, inclusive locale for learning\, life\, and community involvement. … Third Space is deeply grateful to the Cordish family’s continued commitment to Shaarei Tfiloh’s mission and for the family’s vision and investment to make it a vital new center for Jewish learning and life. \n“Their support\, along with that of Howard Perlow and his family\, have been central in allowing Third Space to build on Shaarei Tfiloh’s legacy while refashioning it as a landmark new institution for Baltimore’s Jewish and civic communities.” \nFor information\, visit thirdspacest.org/?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTAAAR1yMSLBAn7R-dn2ywnDmuUKh3_JzGGbvo4FQvNCMKzYdNZY31RnZMI8qxk_aem_AQIHMoVV3yHqTvOZtPzXz91dbIFulI65dJOQQI0vtETu3H21pwu3E_mmM3cw-Jb60_liv75fu2BGF9YVlcXEikE3#about or call 410-581-5022. \n

SUMMARY:BSO Music Presents: Stravinsky and Tan Dun
DESCRIPTION:Writing music that straddles Chinese and Western traditions\, Tan Dun is a boundary-breaking artist of limitless imagination and inclusivity\, conjuring a soundscape that makes use of everything from ancient relics to smartphones. This first American performance of Five Muses of Dunhuang brings to life forgotten instruments painted centuries ago on devotional murals in Chinese caves. As a conductor\, Tan has unique insights into another perceptive witness and recreator of human ritual\, Stravinsky\, especially in this rarely heard transcription from a Chinese-themed opera. SUMMARY:LOVE\, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE presented by Vagabond Players
DESCRIPTION:Vagabond Players concludes their 108th season with Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron’s acclaimed comedy hit\, LOVE\, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE (based on the book by Ilene Beckerman) directed by Belle Burr. \nEven if clothes do not make a woman\, they often tell her story. This smart and clever production tells the story of over two dozen women\, who dish about their mothers\, past husbands\, lovers and falling in love\, and the memories associated with first bras\, a prom dress\, a bridal gown\, or a beloved handbag. Treasured outfits become lightning sparks to treasured memories that offer a joyous celebration of lives well lived. \nFollowing an acclaimed two-year engagement in New York\, LOVE\, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE has been performed in cities across the United States and around the world (including Paris\, Rio De Janeiro and Sydney). \n“…. a big bowl of buttered popcorn for women who can share deeply in the particulars of experience dissected and discussed.” – New York Times \n“As life unfolds\, one’s clothing and accessories expand to fill the needs of the moment\, and as this wonderfully witty show illustrates\, what one wears to the party is sometimes more memorable than the party itself.” – The Hollywood Reporter \nLOVE\, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE opens Friday\, May 17 and runs through Sunday\, June 9\, with weekly performances Fridays/Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. with a special “$10 Thursdays on Broadway” performance June 6 at 8 p.m.
