SUMMARY:The Hidden History of Jewish People on the Islands of Madeira and Azores and the Unsolved Mystery of a Sefer Torah
DESCRIPTION:Join the BZD and renowned author and historian\, Irene Shaland in her exploration of two Portuguese autonomous regions in the Atlantic: Madeira and Azores. \nWith their mild climate\, dramatic waterfalls\, and mountains\, both archipelagos are popular tourist destinations with over five million visitors arriving annually. Few of the tourists though know that the two islands of Madeira and the nine islands of Azores have a hidden Jewish history\, and the archipelagos tightly guard their secrets. The Jewish presence on the islands\, still under the radar of most historians\, spans the entire length of recorded history beginning with their discovery by the Portuguese in the 14th and 15th centuries. It is even thought that the explorer who discovered Madeira\, Joao Zarco\, was of Crypto-Jewish ancestry.

SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversation Series Featuring Talia Carner\, author of "The Boy with the Star Tattoo"
DESCRIPTION:The Boy with the Star Tattoo is a novel of courage\, love\, and loss spanning a period of 25 years\, from postwar France when Israeli agents roamed the countryside rescuing hidden Jewish orphans\, to the 1969 Israeli military operation\, the Cherbourg Project\, when embargoed Israeli missile boats daringly escaped the French port of Cherbourg. Focusing on the decimation of European Jewry in the aftermath of the Holocaust\, the postwar Youth Aliyah movement which brought 16\,000 Jewish youth to Mandatory Palestine\, and the State of Israel’s military struggles in its nascent years\, Talia Carner’s The Boy with the Star Tattoo delves deep into the nature of identity\, uncertainty\, and belonging. \nNovelist Talia Carner\, who will join HBI Director Lisa Fishbayn Joffe in conversation\, is formerly the publisher of Savvy Woman magazine\, an award-winning author of six novels and numerous stories\, essays\, and articles\, and a committed supporter of global human rights. HBI is honored that Talia Carner is a longstanding member of the HBI Board of Advisors. \nThe Boy with the Star Tattoo will be available on January 30th at Amazon\, Bookshop\, and your local bookseller. SUMMARY:What is Judaism? – The Dispute between Martin Buber and Franz Rosenzweig
DESCRIPTION:In 1923 Rosenzweig wrote an open letter to Martin Buber titled “Die Bauleute” (The Builders)\, a letter that later became a central part of Rosenzweig’s Jewish theological legacy. \nIn “The Builders – Concerning the Jewish Law” Rosenzweig accuses Buber that despite liberating “us” from the shackles of 19th century academic objective engagement with “Judaism” and opening our minds and hearts to seek the “inner power” of the Jewish tradition\, he failed to answer the crucial existential question “what are we to do?” That is\, Buber’s answer left the question of Jewish praxis\, of Halakhah\, outside of the realm of possible answers. \nBuber\, of course\, did not leave the question of action in this world unanswered. He provided a non-halakhic answer\, arguing that the “truth” of Judaism lies in its religiosity\, not its manifestation as a religion\, or as Law. \nOur session will be dedicated to the exploration of these two opposing concepts of “Judaism” and in fact\, of the ever-present existential question of ““what are we (Jews) to do?”

SUMMARY:CJC Offers Virtual Tour of Jewish Iran
DESCRIPTION:Travel with Columbia Jewish Congregation\, virtually\, to Jewish Iran. \nIran’s Jewish community is one of the oldest diaspora communities in the world. But is there more to those 2\,700 years of history than Queen Esther and the Islamic Revolution? \nThis talk examines the lesser-known parts of Iran’s Jewish History\, a vast story of prophets\, autonomous nations\, divergent sects\, epic poetry\, and political intrigue. Through the music\, languages\, foods\, writings\, traditions\, and stories of two millennia\, along with their ties to neighboring and faraway communities\, the Jews of Iran have forged a culture at once Persian and Jewish\, with traditions and aesthetics uniquely their own. Now in a second Diaspora in the United States and Israel\, with a small population remaining in Iran\, the community faces inevitable changes. \nWe will use the knowledge of the past to look to the future of the community and discuss how the unique heritage of Iran’s Jews can be preserved.

SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Orit Avishai\, author of "Queer Judaism: LGBT Activism and the Remaking of Jewish Orthodoxy in Israel"
DESCRIPTION:Until fairly recently\, Orthodox people in Israel could not imagine embracing their LGBT sexual or gender identity and staying within the Orthodox fold. But within the span of about a decade and a half\, Orthodox LGBT people have forged social circles and communities and become much more visible. This has been a remarkable shift in a relatively short time span. Drawing on more than 120 interviews\, Orit Avishai’s Queer Judaism offers the compelling story of how Jewish LGBT persons in Israel accomplished this radical change. \nOrit Avishai\, who will join HBI Director Lisa Fishbayn Joffe in conversation\, is a professor of Sociology and Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Fordham University\, where she is also affiliated with the Center for Jewish Studies. HBI is honored to have supported Orit Avishai’s research on this project in 2018 with an HBI Research Award. \nQueer Judaism: LGBT Activism and the Remaking of Jewish Orthodoxy in Israel is available at Amazon\, Bookshop\, and your local bookseller.

SUMMARY:A Rabbinic Debate about Slavery on the Eve of the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:As civil war loomed\, President James Buchanan designated January 4\, 1861 as a national day for fasting and prayer. That day Rabbi Morris Raphall of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Manhattan gave a sermon arguing that a civil war should not be waged over slavery since slavery was a biblically sanctioned institution. The Baltimore Rabbi David Einhorn responded with an essay excoriating Raphall for his terrible misunderstanding of the Bible. Does the Bible consider slavery legitimate? \nIn this session\, we’ll explore a rabbinic debate over this question.
