SUMMARY:ROOM SERVICE at Vagabond Players
DESCRIPTION:Vagabond Players continues its 109th season with a great American farce\, ROOM SERVICE\, written by John Murray and Allen Boretz\, and directed by Steve Goldklang. \nYou’re invited to check into Suite 904 of the Empire Hotel\, where penniless Broadway producer and gifted con man Gordon Miller is desperately trying to raise the cash needed to avoid having his cast and crew (in rehearsal for his next production) evicted and the entire show shut down. Armed with a nonstop load of double-talk\, Gordon does battle with a bullying hotel executive\, a pompous physician\, a determined collection agency clerk and a paranoid attorney to ensure that the show must go on! The laughs don’t stop coming in this deliciously delirious and delectable show biz comedy that became an acclaimed Marx Brothers movie. \n“Like most farces\, the play relies on snappy dialogue\, slapstick comedy\, and a wickedly fast pace…the apparent chaos masks a tightly written play… absolutely as good as it gets.” – CURTAIN UP \n“If you are in the mood for a fun frolic through the era that brought us Bogart and Bette Davis\, Chaplin and Hepburn and Mae West\, then you are really in for a treat! It’s a great story with more twists and turns than you can shake a stick at.” – NOHOARTSDISTRTICT.COM \nROOM SERVICE opens Friday\, Jan. 10 and runs through Sunday\, Feb. 2\, with weekly performances Fridays/Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. And check out a special “Thursdays on Broadway” performance Jan. 30 at 8 p.m. when all tickets are just $10. \nFor tickets\, cast and show info visit www.vagabondplayers.org. Special discounts and group rates are available online. \nLocated at 806 S. Broadway\, Vagabond Players is easily accessible to patrons.

SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Kerry Wallach\, author of Traces of a Jewish Artist: The Lost Life and Work of Rahel Szalit
DESCRIPTION:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Kerry Wallach\, author of Traces of a Jewish Artist: The Lost Life and Work of Rahel Szalit \nJanuary 22\, 2025 \n7 pm EST | Online \nHBI is honored to have supported Kerry Wallach’s research on this with a 2019 HBI Research Award. \nGraphic artist\, illustrator\, painter\, and cartoonist Rahel Szalit (1888–1942) was among the best-known Jewish women artists in Weimar Berlin. Highly regarded by art historians and critics of her day\, she made a name for herself with soulful\, sometimes humorous illustrations of Jewish and world literature by Sholem Aleichem\, Heinrich Heine\, Leo Tolstoy\, Charles Dickens\, and others. After she was arrested by the French police and then murdered by the Nazis at Auschwitz\, she was all but lost to history\, and most of her paintings have been destroyed or gone missing. \nWallach used primary and secondary sources including the “Szalit recovery team\,” her colleagues and institutions in seven countries around the world\, to give us a powerfully moving account of a feminist Jewish artist\, illustrator\, painter\, and writer who had fallen through the cracks of historic memory. This biography recovers Szalit’s life and presents a stunning collection of her art. \nKerry Wallach is Professor and Chair of German Studies and an affiliate of the Jewish Studies Program at Gettysburg College. \nTraces of a Jewish Artist: The Lost Life and Work of Rahel Szalit is available at Amazon\, Bookshop\, Penn State University Press (30% off with code NR24\, and your local bookseller). \nThis event will be recorded and shared with registrants. It will also be available to view on HBI’s website.

SUMMARY:Author Liza Wiemer to Speak at Local Schools for Holocaust Remembrance Day
DESCRIPTION:In honor of the observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day\, the Jewish Library of Baltimore will present award-winning author and educator Liza Wiemer on Jan. 27-28 at four middle and high schools across the Baltimore area to discuss her 2020 novel\, “The Assignment” (Delacorte Press). \nWiemer’s visit will take place at Pikesville High School\, Gilman School\, Maryvale Preparatory School and Ohr Chadash Academy. The initiative seeks to educate students about the Holocaust\, antisemitism\, and the importance of standing up against hatred and bigotry. \n“The Assignment” is based on a real-life incident in 2017 when a high school teacher assigned students to argue for “The Final Solution.” The novel explores the moral courage of two students who speak out against this assignment\, sparking intense conflict and resistance. Themes of antisemitism\, discrimination\, hate groups\, and the role of media and institutions are at the heart of the book. \nWiemer\, who lives in Milwaukee\, will also return to the Baltimore area in April for Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) observances. Schools interested in hosting Wiemer for future visits can reach out to the Jewish Library of Baltimore at jewishlibraryph@jewishlibrarybaltimore.org.
