SUMMARY:Goucher Exhibition to Tell WWII Story of Amsterdam Zoo
DESCRIPTION:Baltimore photographer Phyllis Arbesman Berger’s powerful new exhibition\, “Onderduiker: Hiding in Plain Sight at Amsterdam’s ARTIS Zoo during WWII\,” will be presented at Goucher College’s Rosenberg Gallery\, 1021 Dulaney Valley Road in Towson\, from Apr. 26 to May 28 (Onderduiker is the Dutch term for a person in hiding.) \nThe exhibition tells the harrowing story of the Jews\, resistance fighters and young men who escaped forced labor and owed their lives to the staff at the ARTIS Amsterdam Royal Zoo during World War II \nUsing infrared photography and lyrical poetry\, Berger explores the psychological landscapes of the individuals who daily lived in constant fear. Nazi soldiers loved the zoo and visited daily\, not realizing that people were in hiding a wall away. Images and text chronicle the struggles of ordinary people caught in extraordinary circumstances as they spend time with their memories\, take flight with imagination\, and experience longing\, grief and at times terror. \nLocated near the Jewish neighborhood of the Jodenbuurt\, ARTIS served as a hiding place for 200-300 men\, women and children\, all of whom survived during their time in hiding. The zoo stayed open throughout the war\, and Onderduikers spent months\, even years\, hidden behind the scenes of animal enclosures in kitchens\, attics and stables. \nPhylllis Arbesman Berger\nThis setting — with its peaceful paths\, sculpture gardens and inventive architecture that served as hiding places — provides the stage for telling the stories of the Onderduikers. The photographs and poetry in this exhibition are informed by conversations with the ARTIS Zoo historian\, the former director of the zoo (an Onderduiker himself) and groundskeepers during visits over the past seven years. \nThis exhibition is a collaboration between the artist and students at Goucher College\, whose research and writing provide a foundation for understanding the historical context of this work. \n\nOpening Reception: Apr. 26\, 3-5 p.m.\nArtists Talk: Apr. 26\, 3:30-4:30 p.m.\nCurator’s Tour: May 23\, 1-2 p.m.\n\nFor information\, visit goucherartgalleries.com/exhibitions. \n

SUMMARY:In Her Words: A Speaker Series with Pam Sherman
DESCRIPTION:Looking to show up in the best possible way for yourself\, your family\, your community and in your professional life? \nJoin the Soul Center for an impactful evening with Pam Sherman\, global leadership coach\, writer\, actor\, recovering lawyer and author of the new book\, Play You\, the Role of a Lifetime Bridge the Believability Gap to Boost Confidence\, Connection\, and Impact. \nDuring this powerful conversation with Rabbi Dana Saroken\, Pam will share how in our fast-changing world there’s often a chasm between who we are\, who we think we “should” be\, and how we show up for others—what she calls the believability gap. It can dim our confidence\, connection\, and impact. And the counterintuitive solution is to use the tools actors use to develop their core character. \nThis event is for anyone who wants to show-up in the best possible way personally and professionally – for all those you wish to impact\, lead\, and serve. With humor\, great stories\, and meaningful takeaways\, Pam will empower us to make the greatest impact with the greatest gift we can give the world: YOU. Each ticket includes a copy of Pam’s new book.

SUMMARY:Novelist Leah Eskin to Speak at Ivy Bookshop
DESCRIPTION:Journalist and veteran food writer Leah Eskin will discuss her debut novel\, “Like Wafers in Honey” (Levine Querido)\, on the back patio at The Ivy Bookshop\, 5928 Falls Road. A former Baltimore resident and owner of Crumble Handmade Pastry\, Eskin now lives in Chicago. \n“Like Wafers in Honey” opens in 1943 in the Italian mountaintop town of Pitigliano\, once called “Little Jerusalem” for its vibrant\, centuries-old Jewish community. Mussolini has enacted anti-Jewish laws across Italy\, and the family of Stella Fortuna struggles to maintain any sense of their former life. Then one night\, a neighbor comes to their door and tells them the Nazis have arrived to help the fascists of Italy enact their own “Final Solution.” \nIn a separate timeline of the novel\, Edda Servi Machlin is a housewife in 1960s Westchester\, New York\, trying to make sense of a new culture\, as well as the “spaghetti-and-meatballs” meals that pass for Italian cuisine. \nLeah Eskin\nFor nearly 20 years\, Eskin’s award-winning column “Home on the Range” ran in the Chicago Tribune and other newspapers. Eskin writes the dessert column for Midwest Living magazine. \n“Leah Eskin has woven her passion for food and history into a delicious and moving tale of Jewish survival. Her book will inspire readers from all backgrounds to cook and to persevere\,” wrote Gabriella Gershenson\, James Beard Award-winning food writer\, of “Like Wafers in Honey.” \nBaltimore-based writer and food historian Mary Zajac will host Eskin’s talk at The Ivy. SUMMARY:THE DIVINE SISTER Concludes Vagabond Players’ 110th Season
DESCRIPTION:Charles Busch’s Irreverent Comedy Runs May 29 – June 21\, 2026 \nReligious visions! Forbidden love! Crises of faith! Maraschino cherry stigmata! This June\, Vagabond Players closes its 110th Season\, and celebrates Pride Month\, with Charles Busch’s The Divine Sister\, directed by Steve Goldklang. \nVagabond Players’ wildly campy production of THE DIVINE SISTER will convert audiences into being a true believer with a gleefully outrageous send-up of every wonderfully over-the-top nun movie ever made. Special discounts and group rates are available online. \nLocated in the heart of Baltimore’s historic Fells Point\, Vagabond Players continues its tradition of bold\, intimate theater that sparks conversation and celebrates artistic freedom. Now in its 110th season\, the company remains a cornerstone of Baltimore’s performing arts scene.

SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Dr. Miriam Udel\, “Modern Jewish Worldmaking Through Yiddish Children's Literature”
DESCRIPTION:The Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series is sponsored by Debs Weinberg to honor her mother Sandy’s love of books and learning about Jewish women’s lives. \nVisit https://bit.ly/HBIConversations for more information. \nSandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series. Cosponsored by The Jewish Library of Baltimore \nWinner\, 75th National Jewish Book Award in Education & Jewish Identity \nMiriam Udel’s rich Modern Jewish Worldmaking Through Yiddish Children’s Literature explores the world of Jewish literature written for Yiddish-speaking children during the 20th century when the community clung to Jewish heritage while also helping their children make sense of being a Jew in the modern world. Udel elegantly traces how these stories and poems underpinned new formulations of secular Jewishness\, creating a world for Jewish children to inhabit with dignity\, justice\, and joy. \nHBI is delighted to have supported Udel’s research for Modern Jewish Worldmaking. In 2022\, Udel explored the “New Girl” — a creature of freedom and central character in Yiddish literature — as an HBI Scholar in Residence. \nDr. Miriam Udel is an associate professor of Yiddish Language\, Literature\, and Culture and the Judith London Evans Director of the Tam Institute of Jewish Studies at Emory University. She holds an AB in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations and a PhD in Comparative Literature\, both from Harvard University\, and was ordained in 2019 at Yeshivat Maharat. She is the author of Never Better!: The Modern Jewish Picaresque (University of Michigan Press) and the editor and translator of Honey on the Page: A Treasury of Yiddish Children’s Literature (NYU Press). \nModern Jewish Worldmaking is available at Princeton University Press\, Bookshop\, Amazon\, and your local bookseller.
