SUMMARY:CHESS presented by Vagabond Players
DESCRIPTION:Vagabond Players is thrilled to begin its 108th season with the highly-acclaimed musical CHESS – music by Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson\, lyrics by Tim Rice (based on an idea by Tim Rice) and directed by Stephen Deininger. \nDuring the height of the Cold War\, the renowned game of chess becomes a battleground for romantic rivalries\, super-power politics\, and international intrigue as two great chess masters\, an American and a Russian\, meet to fight it out for the world championship and the love of one woman. From Tyrol to Thailand\, the players\, lovers\, politicians and spies manipulate and are manipulated to the pulse of a monumental score by the ABBA team that includes such classics as “One Night in Bangkok” an “Heaven Help My Heart.” \n“Originally running for 3 years in the West End\, ‘CHESS’ by Tim Rice and the blokes from Abba…has a genuinely fantastic score\, perhaps one of the few musicals between ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Hamilton’ to meaningfully sound like a worthwhile product of the popular music of its day.” TimeOut \n“…one of the best rock scores ever produced in the theatre.” Time Magazine \nCHESS opens Friday\, Oct. 20 and runs through Sunday\, Nov. 19\, with weekly performances Fridays/Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m.\, and a special $16 Thursdays on Broadway performance on Nov. 16 at 8 p.m. \nFor tickets and show info visit vagabondplayers.org. Special group rates are available online. \nLocated at 806 S. Broadway in historic Fells Point\, Vagabond Players is easily accessible to patrons. Wheelchair accessibility is available. \nCHESS is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals. concordtheatricals.com

SUMMARY:Museum of Industry Presents Exhibition on B-more's Taverns
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “The Neighborhood Corner Bar: A Baltimore Story\, 1870-1920” will open at the Baltimore Museum of Industry on Thursday\, Oct. 12. The BMI is located at 1415 Key Highway in Federal Hill. \nFrom the 1870s to 1920\, corner bars\, taverns and saloons became fixtures in working-class neighborhoods throughout Baltimore. Made possible by the direct sponsorship of breweries\, corner bars were social centers where patrons could grab a “free lunch” with the purchase of a five-cent drink\, discuss politics and labor organizing\, send and receive mail\, cash paychecks\, and even find jobs or financial assistance. As social institutions\, these watering holes reflected the segregated and exclusionary practices of their era. \nLike other galleries at the BMI\, “The Neighborhood Corner Bar” exhibition is immersive. The exhibition features a long wooden bar with a brass rail and mirrored cabinet in the rear\, both flanked by historic beer advertisements\, sample menus and photographs\, many of them donated by local family members of past bar owners during community collecting events held around the city. SUMMARY:The Jews of Bessarabia (Moldova). Visit Kishinev and other Jewish towns - Part One
DESCRIPTION:Join the BZD and our guide\, Evgenia Kempinski\, as we embark on this two-part journey\, encompassing both the historical riches and the vibrant contemporary tapestry of Jewish life in Bessarabia\, Moldova. \n*Part 1: “Journey through Time: The Jewish Legacy in Bessarabia”* \nWelcome to the first segment of our immersive tour. In this portion\, we will embark on a historical expedition\, tracing the remarkable story of Jewish life in this region. \nToday\, Moldova remains home to a resilient Jewish community\, numbering approximately 15\,000 to 20\,000 members. However\, to fully appreciate their story\, we must journey back in time to explore the profound Jewish legacy of Bessarabia. \nThroughout history\, this land\, has witnessed the presence of Jews dating as far back as the Roman era. Yet\, during the 19th and 20th centuries\, Moldovan Jewish life thrived\, leaving an indelible mark on European and global Jewish history. \nBessarabia is celebrated for its renowned rabbis\, skilled Jewish artisans\, lyrical poets\, and the rich musical culture of Bessarabian Yiddish. We will visit some of the emblematic Jewish towns. These towns hold the secrets to the vibrant Jewish life that once thrived here\, allowing us to reimagine the bygone era. \nOur journey will then lead us through the streets of Kishinev. Once a bustling city with over 50\,000 Jewish residents\, Kishinev is etched into Jewish history for the tragic events of the 1903 Jewish pogrom. This pogrom left an indelible mark on the Jewish story\, and we will explore its unique significance. \nAs we meander through Kishinev\, we will uncover the tales of its Jewish inhabitants\, the formation of self-defense Jewish squads\, the architectural wonders of Kishinev Synagogues\, the intellectual and political leaders who left an enduring legacy\, and the daily lives of its Jewish population. \nAmong the remnants of this rich history\, we will encounter former synagogues and ancient cemeteries\, poignant reminders of the once-thriving Jewish Life in Moldova
