SUMMARY:Loyola University Maryland 2025 Humanities Symposium Keynote Address
DESCRIPTION:Amitav Ghosh – the award-winning novelist named by Foreign Policy magazine as “one of the most important global thinkers of the preceding decade” – will discuss migration in the age of climate change. He will share poignant stories he gathered from migrant camps in Italy\, told in the migrants’ native languages\, offering a unique window into the personal journeys of those displaced by climate-induced challenges. \nFree and open to the general public\, as well as the region’s academic communities\, the lecture will be followed by a book signing with his books available for purchase. Advance registration for the keynote address is encouraged by visiting loyola.edu/symposium. \nGhosh’ work has been translated into 30+ languages and whose essays have appeared in The New Yorker\, The New Republic and The New York Times. He holds four Lifetime Achievement awards and five honorary doctorates. His accolades include being awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India\, being selected as a joint winner with Margaret Atwood of a Dan David Prize\, and becoming the first English-language writer to receive the Jnanpith Award\, India’s highest literary honor. \nGhosh earned the inaugural Utah Award for the Environmental Humanities for his book\, The Great Derangement: Climate Change and the Unthinkable\, which Loyola students have been studying. His newest book\, Smoke & Ashes – which unravels the impact of the opium trade on global history and in his own family – was named a Most Anticipated Book of 2024 by Foreign Policy\, Literary Hub and The Millions. \nThe keynote address will cap off various faculty workshops\, student-faculty colloquia and activities following the theme of Cry of the Earth\, Cry of the Poor. Since 1986\, Loyola’s Humanities Center has sponsored the annual Humanities Symposium – a series of events related to a particular text for students\, faculty\, friends of the University and the Baltimore community. The main goal has been to get a large portion of the Loyola community to read the same work at roughly the same time and to be engaged in a common inquiry. Keynote speakers have included Elie Wiesel\, Toni Morrison\, Tracy Chevalier\, Czeslaw Milosz\, Phil Klay\, Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale and William Bennett.

SUMMARY:Shriver Hall Concert Series: Ivalas Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Shriver Hall Concert Series presents charismatic rising stars the Ivalas Quartet—currently the Graduate Resident String Quartet at Juilliard—performing a program traversing the musical heavens. Golijov took inspiration for his poignant Tenebrae from a planetarium visit with his son. Sparked by a lecture on physics\, Alberga’s rich and spellbinding quartet explores the ideas of swirling particles and stargazing from outer space. Finally\, the group infuses one of Beethoven’s final works with “tremendous heart and beauty” (The Strad).\nIvalas Quartet \nOSVALDO GOLIJOV: Tenebrae\nELEANOR ALBERGA: String Quartet No. 1\nLUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN: String Quartet in B-flat major\, Op. 130 \nSuggested donation $10

SUMMARY:PIPELINE at Vagabond Players
DESCRIPTION:PIPELINE at Vagabond Players April 4 – 27\, 2025 \nVagabond Players continues its 109th season with PIPELINE\, Dominique Morisseau’s explosive drama depicting how a mother’s hopes for her teenage son clash with an educational system rigged against him. \nNya\, a dedicated teacher in an inner city public high school\, is shocked to learn that her own teenage son\, Omari\, faces expulsion from his private school after physically attacking an instructor there. She is overtaken by anxiety-inducing feelings of exasperation and futility in her efforts to circumvent the criminal future she fears Omari could be heading into. Is this young man doomed to die early? Are his parents responsible\, and is it possible to change his future? In her searingly powerful and compassionate play\, Morisseau has created an eloquent and deeply compassionate look at a broken education system\, the moments we are pushed to our limits\, and the ferocity of one parent’s love. \n“PIPELINE confirms Dominique Morisseau’s reputation as a playwright of piercing eloquence.” – The New York Times \n“PIPELINE is an emotionally harrowing\, ethically ambiguous drama that raises barbed questions about class\, race\, parental duty\, and the state of American education.” – Variety \nPIPELINE opens Friday\, April 4 and runs through Sunday\, April 27\, with weekly performances Fridays/Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. And check out a special “Thursdays on Broadway” performance April 24 at 8 p.m. when all tickets are just $10.
