SUMMARY:Loyola University Maryland 2026 Humanities Symposium Keynote Address
DESCRIPTION:Pulitzer Prize–winning author and public historian David W. Blight will deliver this free lecture exploring how the Declaration of Independence’s aspirational ideals continue to shape and challenge our understanding of equality 250 years after its signing. \nA book signing with books available for purchase will immediately follow the talk. Guests can meet Blight\, who has written and lectured extensively on slavery and abolitionism\, the Civil War and Reconstruction\, race relations\, and problems in public history\, American historical memory and African American intellectual and cultural history. \nHis Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom garnered nine book awards – including the Pulitzer Prize\, the Francis Parkman Prize\, the Bancroft Prize and the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize – and was optioned by Higher Ground Productions and Netflix for a projected feature film. He previously consulted for such documentary films as “Death and the Civil War\,” the PBS series\, “Africans in America\,” and “The Reconstruction Era.” \nIn addition to being one of the authors of the bestselling American history textbook for the college level\, A People and a Nation\, Blight is series advisor and editor for Bedford Books’ American History and Culture series. He is also a frequent book reviewer for The New York Times\, Washington Post Book World\, the Chicago Tribune\, the Los Angeles Times\, the San Francisco Chronicle\, The Boston Globe\, Slate\, and other media outlets. \nHaving previously taught at Amherst College and held distinguished fellowships at Cambridge University\, the Huntington Library\, and the New York Public Library\, Blight currently is Sterling Professor of History at Yale University and Director of the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery\, Resistance\, and Abolition. As chair of the Yale and Slavery Working Group\, he co-authored Yale and Slavery: A History. \nBlight’s keynote address will cap off various faculty workshops\, student-faculty colloquia and activities following the theme “Life\, Liberty\, and the Unfinished Work of Democracy.” Since 1986\, Loyola’s Humanities Center has sponsored the annual Humanities Symposium – a series of events related to a particular text for students\, faculty\, friends of the University and the Baltimore community. The main goal has been to get a large portion of the Loyola community to read the same work at roughly the same time and to be engaged in a common inquiry. Keynote speakers have included Elie Wiesel\, Toni Morrison\, Tracy Chevalier\, Czeslaw Milosz\, Phil Klay\, Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale and William Bennett.

Listening is just as important as playing. Babies are just as important as grandparents. Free movement and play are encouraged. A variety of instruments are available with which to play and experiment. Live recording and looping technology captures ideas as they happen and builds new songs on the spot. SUMMARY:Jewish Justification For Diaspora Life
DESCRIPTION:The majority of Jews have lived in exile from the time of the Babylonian Exile in the early sixth century BCE until the present day\, and though exile has often been accompanied by difficulties\, it has also provided Jews with peace in homes where they had the opportunity to flourish. \nBy virtue of this reality\, Jews have often defended and even lauded their diaspora experiences\, in teachings and expressions that in recent generations have been too little recognized. \nIn this session\, Professor David Kraemer of The Jewish Theological Seminary will introduce you to some of these teachings\, asking what they may mean for the future of Jewish identity.

SUMMARY:A History Worth Repeating: Songs and Stories from Lucius
DESCRIPTION:Join Third Space at Shaarei Tfiloh on Saturday\, March 28 for a special all-ages night of acoustic music and storytelling from Lucius! \nKnown for their engaging live performances and spell-binding harmonies\, Grammy-nominated indie-pop band are a mesmerizing experience of mirrored kinship and honesty. In 2025\, the band released their fourth studio album\, Lucius\, which Rolling Stone called “the best album of their career.” Lucius’ most personal and purposeful album to date explores relationships\, motherhood\, and life’s complexities with a unique vulnerability only made possible due to the familial nature of the band. The New Yorker praises\, “The band’s new self-titled album reaches the pinnacle of a vibrant\, harmonic enterprise\,” while Paste describes their sound as “girl-group revivalism\, cosmic pop\, and a kind of bicoastal harmonizing that once echoed through western canyons.” \nLucius’ self-titled record follows an impressive history of critically acclaimed full-length projects. Their debut\, Wildewoman\, introduced their signature dual lead vocals and retro charm. It was widely praised for the album’s throwback sound with NPR declaring it “perfect\, magnetic pop music” Meanwhile\, The Guardian called lead singers Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig’s voices “powerful … melding beautifully in harmony.” With the release of Good Grief in 2016\, Lucius traded some of their folk roots for polished synth-pop. The band’s acclaimed 2022 record\, Second Nature\, marked a striking return\, and was produced by Brandi Carlile and Dave Cobb. Released to overwhelming acclaim\, the Los Angeles Times praised\, “dazzling…Second Nature mines an ’80s-pop sound with lush synths and sleek disco grooves under the women’s laser-guided vocals\,” while Relix proclaimed\, “stunning…a 10-song\, smart-pop masterpiece.” \nThroughout their acclaimed career\, Lucius has performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”\, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert”\, BBC’s Later! with Jools Holland\, PBS’ “Austin City Limits” and “The Kelly Clarkson Show”. Holly Laessig and Jess Wolfe are some of the most sought-after collaborators in popular music due to their “otherworldly” vocals (Los Angeles Times). The duo have recorded and performed with many artists including Joni Mitchell\, Mumford and Sons\, The National\, Harry Styles\, Ringo Starr\, Ozzy Osborne\, Sheryl Crow\, and Brandi Carlile including appearances on the Grammy stage and NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.” Lucius are Laessig\, Wolfe\, and Peter Lalish. \nDoors at 7 PM\, Show starts at 8 PM \n$45 in advance\, $50 at the door. | Tickets go on sale Friday\, December 12\, 2025
