SUMMARY:Echoes Of Synagogues Past On The Lower East Side
DESCRIPTION:Join the BZD and our guide Bradley Shaw in partnership with the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy as we explore “Echoes of Synagogues Past on the Lower East Side.” Approximately one hundred years ago\, in the heart of the Lower East Side\, it seemed like every street had at least one synagogue to satisfy the burgeoning Orthodox Jewish community. Some religious sites were small shtieblach (one-room houses of prayer)\, usually located in tenement apartments – with many buildings housing multiple Shuls. Quite a few\, however\, were found in buildings of varying sizes\, including converted townhomes and churches. Some were initially constructed and designed by famous architects on a grand scale to fit a large\, expanding congregation. \nThough most of these former religious structures have been lost to time in a constantly changing neighborhood\, some still exist today. The great majority are no longer synagogues\, but their architecture and stories still ‘echo’ through a neighborhood that once housed over a million and a half primarily impoverished Jewish immigrants. \nJoin us on this sort of “then and now” with urban historian and educator Bradley Shaw as we virtually visit a handful of these places of worship. Learn about their congregations and how they lived in what was once the most densely populated place on earth. Also included are little-known and interesting facts about the neighborhood and reminiscent of a native son who has been returning for over 60 years. \nBradley\, our guide on this journey\, was born on the Lower East Side\, has a BA in History and Education from Brooklyn College\, and is a licensed NYC tour guide.

SUMMARY:Virtual Tour Of Jewish Argentina Part 2: Argentina Was The Cape Of Last Hope For Nazi Criminals
DESCRIPTION:Join the BZD and tour guide\, Claudia Hercman\, for a two-session virtual event on the Jews of Argentina. \nThe second session on June 20th will cover the period before WWII and how many Jews came to Argentina. It became a significant and strong community in a country of immigrants. What happened in Argentina during and after the Holocaust? Who was Perón\, and what was his policy towards the Jews? Did he help the Nazis come to Argentina? Many other countries in Latin America welcomed nazi criminals too. Who were they? What happened to them? Did they have any influence on Latin American society and politics? \nDuring this second session\, we will discuss Argentina’s many political\, economic\, and social crises and the two terror attacks in Buenos Aires. We will show you the buildings that were attacked and the memorials to remember the victims\, and you will learn about the cases that remain open after nearly 28 tears\, respectively. In the 60s\, there were half a million Jews in Argentina\, and now only 200\,000. What happened? There were emigration waves and also assimilation. However\, the Jewish Community in Argentina is still essential\, and you can choose the kind of Jew you want to be. There are many social\, educational\, and religious options. Claudia will share everything about the Jewish Community in Argentina\, and if you want to learn more about the life of a Jew in Buenos Aires today\, Claudia will be there to answer any questions you might have.

SUMMARY:BSO Presents To Awaken The Sleeper
DESCRIPTION:The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra revisits Adolphus Hailstork’s reverent memorial to Martin Luther King Jr. (a work it premiered in 1980)\, and it touches the visceral hurt in Alvin Singleton’s 1994 reaction to police brutality. SUMMARY:Virtual Tour Of Jewish Argentina Part 1: The Jews Who Came To Argentina Planted Seeds And Harvested Doctors
DESCRIPTION:Join the BZD and tour guide\, Claudia Hercman\, for a two-session virtual event on the Jews of Argentina. \nThe first session on June 13th will discuss the Argentinean Jewish Community\, which is the 6th largest in the world after Israel\, the USA\, France\, Canada\, and the UK. You may be wondering why. \nThe first Jewish communities in Latin America were Sephardic. What happened to those Jews during the Inquisition? Why was Latin America part of the Spanish Empire? Is the Jewish Community in Argentina 80% Ashkenazi and only 20% Sephardic today? We will answer all these questions and many more during the first session of our Virtual Tour of Jewish Argentina. We will show you images and short videos of the most important Jewish sites\, and you will also be able to see parts of Buenos Aires\, a wonderful\, cosmopolitan\, European-looking city. \nWe will also tell you about the first Jewish immigrants who settled in the rural areas and talk about the Jewish colonies and the Jewish Gauchos. Finally\, our discussion will conclude with the first Jewish woman who stayed in the shadows for a long time. Mothers and wives. What was their role in the economic and social development of the Jews in Argentina? Unfortunately\, we will also learn about antisemitism in Argentina and a pogrom in Buenos Aires in 1919.
