SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Rabbi Jane Kanarek\, PhD\, author of "Beyond Brutality\, Reclaiming Female Presence in Bavli Sotah"
DESCRIPTION:Join HBI online for the next HBI Conversations event with Hebrew College Professor Rabbi Jane Kanarek\, author of “Beyond Brutality\, Reclaiming Female Presence in Bavli Sotah”. A publication in the Brandeis Press HBI Series on Jewish Women\, Kanarek’s “Beyond Brutality” integrates Talmudic and feminist methodologies to examine one of the most troubling tractates of the Talmud\, tractate Sotah\, which addresses family law. \nBy examining Bavli Sotah as a literary unit\, interrogating how\, why\, and where women are invisible within the tractate\, Kanarek brings to light a ubiquitous female presence which is secondary to moral and sinning men and integral to the formation and stabilization of rabbinic culture. \nRabbi Jane Kanarek is Professor of Rabbinics and Dean of Faculty at Hebrew College. She is the author of Biblical Narrative and the Formation of Rabbinic Law and the co-editor of “Learning to Read Talmud: What It Looks Like and How it Happens” and “Mothers in the Jewish Cultural Imagination”\, the latter two of which were finalists for the National Jewish Book Awards. \nAbout the Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series: \nWant to explore Jewish women’s lives through new and thought-provoking literary fiction\, memoir and more? Want to connect first hand with those who create it? The Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series\, dedicated in honor of our beloved Conversations and Baltimorian friend\, Sandy Silberman\, z”l\, brings us together to share stories that explore the diversity of Jewish women’s experiences across the world from yesterday and today. \nVisit https://bit.ly/HBIConversations for more information.

SUMMARY:On Tikun Olam and What it Takes to Repair the World: A 2-Part Learning Series
DESCRIPTION:Many Jews today champion the value of tikun olam — repairing the world — but what does it really mean? \nJoin Rabbi Jessy on a journey through the different meanings and applications of this notion that has come to be a hallmark category of Jewish identification. We will discuss its merit as a defining identity trait of many current-day Jews and challenge the notion that it stands in its own category\, separate from other clusters of Jewish activity like ritual and observance. \nThis is a great series for those who gravitate to tikun olam as a concept and those looking to better understand what it is and how it fits into one’s Jewish (and human) life. \nAlso on Feb 24th from 5:30pm-7:00pm
