SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Orit Avishai\, author of "Queer Judaism: LGBT Activism and the Remaking of Jewish Orthodoxy in Israel"
DESCRIPTION:Until fairly recently\, Orthodox people in Israel could not imagine embracing their LGBT sexual or gender identity and staying within the Orthodox fold. But within the span of about a decade and a half\, Orthodox LGBT people have forged social circles and communities and become much more visible. This has been a remarkable shift in a relatively short time span. Drawing on more than 120 interviews\, Orit Avishai’s Queer Judaism offers the compelling story of how Jewish LGBT persons in Israel accomplished this radical change. \nOrit Avishai\, who will join HBI Director Lisa Fishbayn Joffe in conversation\, is a professor of Sociology and Women’s\, Gender\, and Sexuality Studies at Fordham University\, where she is also affiliated with the Center for Jewish Studies. HBI is honored to have supported Orit Avishai’s research on this project in 2018 with an HBI Research Award. \nQueer Judaism: LGBT Activism and the Remaking of Jewish Orthodoxy in Israel is available at Amazon\, Bookshop\, and your local bookseller.

SUMMARY:Loyola University Maryland Humanities Symposium 2024 Keynote Address
DESCRIPTION:Best-selling author and poet\, Aimee Nezhukumatathil will discuss the importance of maintaining wonder and curiosity in our lives\, what’s at stake when we ignore wonder\, and how contagious sharing our moments of wonder can be. This lecture will be followed by a book signing with books available for purchase. \nNezhukumatathil authored the illustrated collection of nature essays\, World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies\, Whale Sharks & Other Astonishments – which garnered praise including Barnes and Noble Book of the Year\, New York Times Bestseller\, Kirkus Prize Finalist for Nonfiction and An NPR Best Book of 2020. She also wrote four poetry collections including Oceanic. Her most recent chapbook\, Lace & Pyrite\, features epistolary garden poems with the poet\, Ross Gay. \nAdditional honors include a poetry fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Pushcart Prize\, a Mississippi Arts Council grant\, and being named a Guggenheim Fellow in poetry. In addition to serving as poetry editor for Sierra magazine\, the story-telling arm of The Sierra Club\, she is professor of English and Creative Writing in the University of Mississippi’s MFA program. Her forthcoming book of food essays\, Bite By Bite\, releases in May 2024. \nThe keynote address will cap off a month of Loyola faculty workshops\, student-faculty colloquia and activities following the World of Wonders text\, in conjunction with the theme of “Celebrating Nature.” Since 1986\, Loyola’s Humanities Center has sponsored the annual Humanities Symposium – a series of events related to a particular text for students\, faculty\, friends of the University and the Baltimore community. The main goal has been to get a large portion of the Loyola community to read the same work at roughly the same time and to be engaged in a common inquiry. Keynote speakers have included Elie Wiesel\, Toni Morrison\, Tracy Chevalier\, Czeslaw Milosz\, Phil Klay\, Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale and William Bennett.

SUMMARY:A Rabbinic Debate about Slavery on the Eve of the Civil War
DESCRIPTION:As civil war loomed\, President James Buchanan designated January 4\, 1861 as a national day for fasting and prayer. That day Rabbi Morris Raphall of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun in Manhattan gave a sermon arguing that a civil war should not be waged over slavery since slavery was a biblically sanctioned institution. The Baltimore Rabbi David Einhorn responded with an essay excoriating Raphall for his terrible misunderstanding of the Bible. Does the Bible consider slavery legitimate? \nIn this session\, we’ll explore a rabbinic debate over this question.

DESCRIPTION:March 15-17\, 2024\, marks the return of the American Craft Council’s (ACC) flagship event at the Baltimore Convention Center\, American Craft Made Baltimore Marketplace. The three-day\, immersive event allows guests to celebrate all things handmade\, by showcasing a juried selection of 350 artists from across the country and highlighting the work of local craft organizations\, schools\, and partners. \nLocated in a new space within the Convention Center inside the Charles Street entrance\, the marketplace provides a unique opportunity for collectors\, supporters\, and those who love and live with craft to explore and purchase quality handcrafted items from across the country. Attendees will enjoy meeting the creators of some of their favorite pieces while exploring various mediums such as ceramics\, glass\, jewelry\, clothing\, furniture\, basketry\, and more. \nOnce again\, this year’s marketplace highlights the Emerging Artist Program\, an initiative facilitating the entry of early-career artists into ACC’s well-established craft marketplaces. This program offers lower-cost booths\, extensive exhibitor support\, and opportunities for marketplace awards\, providing emerging artists an unparalleled chance to expand their clientele and advance their careers. This year’s event will feature ACC’s School-to-Market program\, serving as a bridge between higher education in craft and the marketplace. This program offers undergraduate and graduate students experience in a public venue for a curated\, collective exhibition of their work\, enhancing their visibility and connecting them with a broader audience. \n  \nABOUT THE AMERICAN CRAFT COUNCIL:\nThe American Craft Council (ACC) is a national nonprofit working to keep the craft community connected\, inspired\, and thriving. Founder Aileen Osborn Webb recognized the significant impact craft has on individuals and communities and established the nonprofit to preserve\, cultivate\, and celebrate this communal heritage. Eighty years later\, the organization’s efforts span the nation. ACC shares stories and amplifies voices through American Craft magazine and other online content\, creates marketplace events that support artists and connect people to craft\, and celebrates craft’s legacy through longstanding awards and a unique research library. A range of other programs creates space for dialogue and action—because ACC believes craft can bring us together as people. Learn more at craftcouncil.org. \nTHE AMERICAN CRAFT COUNCIL MISSION STATEMENT\nThe American Craft Council fosters livelihoods and ways of living grounded in the artful work of the human hand\, creating a more joyful\, humane\, and regenerative world.

SUMMARY:BSO Music Presents: Mahler Symphony No. 6
DESCRIPTION:There’s nothing like a Mahler symphony to probe and elevate the relationship between a conductor and an orchestra. In Music Director Jonathon Heyward’s maiden Mahler voyage with the BSO\, they plumb the tragic depths of the Sixth Symphony\, demanding 80 minutes of high-wire focus\, right through those soul-piercing hammer strikes that seem to foreshadow the composer’s own heartbreaks to come. The act of making and witnessing such music in a shared space becomes a form of communion that borders on the spiritual. \nArtists\nJonathon Heyward\, conductor \nRepertoire\nMAHLER Symphony No. 6
