SUMMARY:Chabad of Ellicott City to Host Pre-Pesach and Passover Gatherings
DESCRIPTION:Chabad of Ellicott City will hold a grand pre-Passover model seder featuring live music\, a wine tasting\, and explanations of Passover foods and traditions on Wednesday\, Apr. 17 at 11 a.m. The musical model seder — for seniors (50-plus) — will be held at the Elkridge 50+ Center\, 6540 Washington Boulevard in Elkridge. The event will feature a live performance from the Howling Dog Klezmer Band of Ellicott City. \nRabbi Yanky Baron of Chabad of Ellicott City (Provided)\n“This year\, the Jewish community finds added significance in Passover\, which is known as the Festival of Freedom\,” said Rabbi Yanky Baron\, director of Chabad of Ellicott City. “Amid rising antisemitism in Maryland and around the country\, it’s more important than ever that we turn to and embrace our tradition\, faith and our Jewish pride.” \nThis Sunday\, Apr. 14\, from 3-5 p.m.\, Chabad will also host a “Model Matzah Bakery\,” allowing kids and families to learn about the holiday and see how matzah is baked by hand using a 3\,000-year-old recipe. \nOther events to be hosted by Chabad of Ellicott City will be two communal seders on Monday\, April 22\, at 7:15 p.m. and Tuesday\, April 23\, at 8:30 p.m.\, as well as two young professional seders. All are welcome to join\, regardless of Jewish affiliation or background. Reservations can be made online. \n“At this fraught time for Jews\, Passover holds a heightened significance\,” said Rabbi Baron. “The war in Israel and rising antisemitism\, as well as the enduring trauma of Oct. 7 and the 135 hostages in Hamas captivity put a new meaning to the themes of freedom and liberation at the core of Passover.”

SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Ayelet Gundar-Goshen\, author of "The Wolf Hunt"
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning author Ayelet Gundar-Goshen joins HBI Director Lisa Fishbayn Joffe in conversation about The Wolf Hunt\, a head-on collision between the American dream and the Jewish longing for the promised land\, as the reality of racial tensions threatens to boil over. While the novel explores the burning questions of Jewish and Israeli identity\, it is also a piercing psychological portrait of the relationship between parents and their children\, a story about a mother forced to take on the role of a detective\, in search of a truth that might destroy her. \nA clinical psychologist and author\, Ayelet Gundar-Goshen’s first novel\, One Night\, Markovitch\, won the Sapir Prize in 2012 for debut novels\, the Italian Adei-Wizo Prize\, and the French Adei-Wizo Prize\, and has been translated to 14 languages. Gundar-Goshen’s second novel\, Waking Lions\, won the 2017 Jewish Quarterly-Wingate Prize. The New York Times Book Review picked Waking Lions as “Editors’ Choice”\, and The Wall Street Journal selected it for its “Best Summer Reads” list. Her critically acclaimed third novel\, The Liar\, was published in English in 2019. \nThe Wolf Hunt is available at Amazon\, Bookshop\, and your local bookseller. \nPlease note: The recording of this event will be shared with registrants after the event for two weeks only. It will not be available to view on the HBI website.

SUMMARY:BSO Music Presents: Beethoven Symphony No. 2

Conlon\, who “conducts like a man with Beethoven encoded into his muscle memory” (The Washington Post)\, takes a romp through Beethoven’s jovial Second Symphony. \nRecovered Voices is a special initiative of LA Opera that seeks to bring the music of composers suppressed by the Holocaust to the stage. SUMMARY:The 5th Annual Baltimore Old Time Music Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Baltimore Old Time Music Festival Returns for a 5th Year \nThe beloved roots-music festival moves to a new\, more spacious home at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. \nTickets are on sale now for the 5th Annual Baltimore Old Time Music Festival on April 19-20\, 2024 – a joyous\, interactive\, and inspiring celebration of the music rooted in the fiddle and banjo traditions of the region. \nThe sounds of the fiddle and banjo\, along with ballad singing\, country song\, flatfoot dance\, and social square dancing are sewn into the fabric of Baltimore and the surrounding communities. This music\, often called Old Time\, is experiencing a renaissance in Baltimore\, with a community of younger players creating new takes on these old styles. The Baltimore Old Time Music Festival is at the helm of this resurgence and is a gathering for the best and the brightest performers from around the country. Now in its 5th year\, the festival is moving to a new\, more spacious home to accommodate the continued\, expanding enthusiasm for these sounds. \nThe festival is hosted by the father-son musical duo of Ken & Brad Kolodner. “We’re proud of how this festival has evolved over the years and this new chapter is a thrilling development for the community\,” says Brad Kolodner. “It’s shaping up to be a tremendous celebration of a wonderfully vibrant style of music. With jamming\, concerts\, dancing\, workshops\, kids programs\, and more\, it’s an interactive experience fun for all. Imagine a sea of fiddles\, banjos\, and guitars\, swelling together in a chorus of joyous tunes. It’s a sight to behold.” \nAfter four sold-out festivals\, the event will move to its new home at the beautiful Baltimore Museum of Industry (BMI) April 19-20\, 2024 for a musical celebration fun for all ages! Concerts\, hands-on workshops\, square dancing\, jamming\, craft fair and vendor village\, kids programming\, and more on the gorgeous waterfront campus of the Baltimore Museum of Industry with stunning views of the Baltimore skyline. \nEvent Details: \nThe festival convenes some of the country’s brightest old time musicians\, singers\, and dancers to celebrate where this music exists today. Join host artists Ken & Brad Kolodner for the Baltimore Old Time Music Festival with The Onlies; Dom Flemons; Bruce Molsky; The Horsenecks; From Africa to Appalachia with Cheick Hamala Diabate\, Danny Knicely\, and Riley Baugus; Beatbox Dads; Becky Hill & Friends; Allison de Groot and Tatiana Hargreaves; Janine Smith; and Rachel Eddy. \nThe event kicks off on Friday night with a concert under the outdoor Pavillion at the BMI\, followed by an all-star old time revue inside the visually engaging gallery of the museum. \nThe event continues on Saturday with instructional workshops in various instruments for all skill levels\, along with singing\, flatfoot dancing\, printing-making workshops\, and more. Saturday also features a FREE outdoor family day with a square dance geared towards families\, a musical jam with Baltimore’s own Beat Box Dads\, kids crafts from the Waldorf School\, a vendor village\, food\, and more. Concerts will take place inside the building and under the pavilion throughout the day. As the sun sets\, the event builds in energy with headline sets inside the grand gallery of the BMI and an all-star band square dance under the stars.\nBackground: \nThe Baltimore Old Time Music Festival began in 2019 as a manifestation of a growing old time community in the region that coalesced around weekly old time jam sessions and monthly square dances. As this community grew\, it became more reflective of Baltimore\, welcoming players\, dancers\, and fans from a spectrum of age\, gender\, sexual orientation\, and racial and ethnic backgrounds. \nThe Baltimore Old Time Festival is uniquely inter-generational and diverse—a product of efforts to foreground the history of Black artists in the development of this music; hold deep conversations about the roles of women\, Queer and Indigenous artists in the formation of these sounds; introduce gender-free calling (saying “swing your partner” rather than “swing your girl/guy”) into the square dance; and center Baltimore in the development of this style of music.\nThe festival is co-produced by the Center for Cultural Vibrancy and Ken & Brad Kolodner \nFestival Highlights: \nFriday night kick-off concerts under the Pavilion at the BMI and inside the main gallery;\nHands-on instructional workshops for all skill levels;\nActivation of the full BMI campus\, both inside and outside;\nFree Parking!\nLocally sourced Food and Drink options;\nVendor Village with local crafts;\nFREE Family Programming includes a Family Square Dance and a special performance from Beat Box Dads throughout Saturday. \nKids 12 and under free for all other activities; \nAdmission to the fest grants you access to the Museum and all it has to offer with its beautiful exhibits.

SUMMARY:BSO Music Presents: Beethoven Symphony No. 2
DESCRIPTION:James Conlon continues his exploration of Recovered Voices with a rare performance of the Lyric Symphony by Alexander von Zemlinsky\, a onetime star of Vienna’s music scene who fled Nazi Germany and died in obscurity in New York. Opera standouts Melody Moore and Lucas Meachem bring the huge emotions of this ambitious score to life. It was founded in 2006 with generous support from Marilyn Ziering. \nArtists\nJames Conlon\, conductor\nMelody Moore\, soprano\nLucas Meachem\, baritone \nRepertoire\nBEETHOVEN Symphony No. 2\nZEMLINSKY Lyric Symphony
