SUMMARY:Master Naturalist to Speak at Roland Park Community Center
DESCRIPTION:Alison Milligan\, a Maryland master naturalist and professional native species landscaper\, will talk about “Why and How to Create a ‘Homegrown National Park’ at Home or in your Community.” \nThe event will be held at the Roland Park Community Center\, 5802 Roland Avenue in Baltimore. It is organized by Native Species Revival\, a local nonprofit\, and will bring together local professional landscapers\, master gardeners\, nursery owners and homeowners to the cause of increasing biodiversity in central Maryland. \n“This event will take a great step towards raising the public’s consciousness of healing the Earth and developing a more caring relationship with our natural environment\,” said Gregg Jones\, head of the event’s organizing committee. “We hope this event will empower property owners to participate in the ‘homegrown national park’ vision\, so that they can steward the land\, increasing biodiversity by planting more native species. These species provide habitat and food for pollinators and birds whose populations are at risk.” \nMilligan\, a master gardener and watershed steward\, will demonstrate how to solve common landscaping problems while protecting the watershed\, restoring biodiversity\, and adding value to your home. Using readily available native plants\, she will share examples of simple and easy ways to create diverse habitats in large and small yards. Her photographic images of plants and animals illustrate the beauty of native flora and fauna that you can attract to your own home. Choosing native plants makes a difference to the environment\, gives food and shelter to valuable wild species\, and brings beauty to the world. \nFor information\, call  410.800.3743 or email\ngreggj82@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Tracy Slater\, "Together in Manzanar: The True Story of a Japanese Jewish Family in an American Concentration Camp"
DESCRIPTION:“Together in Manzanar” brings into focus the dark episode in American history\, set in motion by the 1941 Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor\, when the US government imprisoned in detention camps tens of thousands of Japanese Americans due to the unfounded fear of anyone in America with even “one drop” of Japanese blood. Among the incarcerated were over 2\,000 members of mixed-race families?—?including Elaine Buchman Yoneda\, a Jewish American woman\, Karl Yoneda\, her Japanese American husband\, and their three-year-old son\, Tommy. Slater’s intimate account explores painful choices and conflicting loyalties\, including Elaine’s leaving behind her White daughter from a previous marriage\, the upheaval and violence that followed\, and the Yonedas’ quest to survive with their children’s lives intact and their family safe and whole. \nTracy Slater\, Brandeis PhD ‘99\, is an American writer from Boston living temporarily in Toronto\, although usually based in Japan\, her husband’s country. Her essays and articles have been published in the “New York Times”\, the “Wall Street Journal”\, the “Washington Post”\, “The Best Women’s Travel Writing”\, the “Boston Globe”\, and “Literary Hub”\, among other places. \nAbout this Series: \nWant to explore Jewish women’s lives through new and thought-provoking literary fiction\, memoir and more? Want to connect first hand with those who create it? The Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series\, dedicated in honor of our beloved Conversations and Baltimorian friend\, Sandy Silberman\, z”l\, brings us together to share stories that explore the diversity of Jewish women’s experiences across the world from yesterday and today.
