SUMMARY:Gallery Reception - Third Space: A Photographic Reconstruction
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition traces the metamorphosis of the historic Shaarei Tfiloh synagogue into Third Space\, revealing the building’s evolution from its first unsettled scaffolds to its final\, welcoming glow. Created by members of the Baltimore Photo Club\, the collection follows the renovation with an artist’s curiosity. Walls are opened\, light shifts\, textures change\, and the past breathes through. Together\, the images honor the craft of rebuilding\, offering a visual archive of continuity\, reinvention\, and the unexpected beauty that emerges when a sacred space learns a new purpose. \nThis exhibit was created by three members of the Baltimore Photography Club. \nBarry Berman has been creating photographs for the past fifty years\, both in his clinical practice of dentistry and of his family. As he transitioned into retirement from active practice\, he discovered the joy of telling a story with his camera. He learned to go farther in his art by creating multiple variations of the same image. The Third Space Restoration project was intriguing to him for a variety of reasons. He was taken by the transformation of a beautiful house of worship into a vibrant community. And\, not the least of which\, that his older brother became a bar mitzvah at Shaarei T’filoh seventy years ago. \nBill Petok is a psychologist with a long history in visual arts. His dissertation research evaluated children’s attention to animation and live action films and was the result of his work in his father’s animation studio while in high school and college. His serious exploration of still photography began shortly after receiving his doctorate from the University of Maryland and focuses on landscapes and architectural images. He was drawn to this project because of his long involvement in synagogue life and the desire to document a worship space’s transformation. \nOfer Sabath Beit Halachmi studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem as well as at Haifa University. He was ordained as a Reform Rabbi in 2005 at the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. He co-founded Aspaklaria\, an organization focused on community development through learning and arts. As a congregational rabbi in Israel\, he transformed the sanctuary into a gallery…a galler-ya\, a sacred art space. After living in Israel and Cincinnati he moved to Baltimore four years ago with his family. His photography looks at the intricacies of objects and scenes and shows an appreciation for detail.

SUMMARY:Vagabond Players: ARSENIC AND OLD LACE
DESCRIPTION:Murder\, mayhem\, and impeccable farce take center stage as Vagabond Players brings Joseph Kesselring’s classic ARSENIC AND OLD LACE to the stage Feb. 20 through March 15\, 2026. Directed by Katie Sheldon in her Vagabond Players directorial debut\, the production marks the third offering of the company’s milestone 110th season. \nMeet Aunt Abby and Aunt Martha Brewster—two of the sweetest homicidal maniacs you’ll ever encounter. Only please don’t let them talk you into a glass of their homemade elderberry wine\, because you probably won’t live to regret it! As the corpses begin to pile up\, so does nephew Mortimer Brewster’s panic—not just in trying to fend off the police\, but also his prodigal brother\, Jonathan\, a murderous gangster with a scary new face and a body count that rivals his aunts’. \nIt may not seem hilarious that a dozen men succumb to one of the most unlikely murder plots ever perpetrated in Brooklyn\, N.Y.\, but ARSENIC AND OLD LACE remains one of American theatre’s most enduring comedies\, which exposes the insanity and dark secrets that lie hidden beneath the veneer of an ordinary\, folksy all-American family. \nARSENIC AND OLD LACE runs Feb. 20 – March 15\, 2026\, with performances Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. And check out a special “Thursdays on Broadway” performance March 12 at 8 p.m. when all tickets are just $12. \nFor tickets\, cast and show info visit vagabondplayers.org. Special discounts and group rates are available online. \nLocated in the heart of Baltimore’s historic Fells Point\, Vagabond Players continues its tradition of bold\, intimate theater that sparks conversation and celebrates artistic freedom. Now in its 110th season\, the company remains a cornerstone of Baltimore’s performing arts scene.

DESCRIPTION:In the fragile quiet of the current ceasefire\, peace remains both an urgent need and a virtual taboo in Israeli public discourse. In times of strife\, even speaking of peace or coexistence can seem naïve or unrealistic. Yet Jewish tradition offers rich and varied conceptions of peace—from prophetic dreams to rabbinic pragmatism—that can help us think more deeply about what peace means now. This session explores how we might sustain the moral imagination required to pursue peace\, even amid fear\, grief\, and instability. When is peace a distant vision\, and when can it become a lived reality? What would it mean to keep its possibility alive at this moment? \nRabbi Shoshana Cohen is an educator\, scholar\, and activist whose work explores the intersection of Jewish text\, ethics\, and contemporary moral life. She lectures in Hebrew and English in Israel and abroad\, serves on the faculty of the Schechter Rabbinical School\, leads the Beit Midrash for the Dorot Fellowship\, and is a research fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem. \nA part of the series Wrestling with Complexity: Israel in Our Time

SUMMARY:"Shattered Liberation: Sexual Violence Against Holocaust Survivors (1943-1946)\," Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Joanna Michlic\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Shattered Liberation: Sexualized Violence Against Holocaust Survivors\, 1943–1946 challenges the notion of joyous liberation of Holocaust survivors by the Red Army by shining light on the sexualized violence that some Holocaust survivors\, in this case\, Jewish women\, endured in the hands of the Soviet Army\, partisans\, rescuers\, and army personnel during the liberation process. The twelve contributors to this work explore a wide range of interactions through testimonies and memoirs including sexual violence\, rape\, forced cohabitation\, sex barter\, aid\, and romance\, and in doing so\, uncover a far more complicated\, if not devastating\, reality. \nJoanna Beata Michlic\, PhD\, is a Senior Honorary Fellow at the Institute of Education\, Practice and Society\, UCL and Affiliate Faculty in Gratz College’s Holocaust and Genocide Studies\, and Antisemitism Studies Departments. A current HBI Research Associate\, Michlic was founder of the HBI Project on Families\, Children and the Holocaust as well as a past visiting professor in Holocaust and Contemporary history at Lund University. Her many books include Poland’s Threatening Other: The Image of the Jew from 1880 to the Present (University of Nebraska Press\, 2008) and Jewish Family 1939 –Present: History\, Representation\, and Memory\, (Brandeis University Press\, 2017\, HBI Series on Jewish Women). Her forthcoming publication\, Through the Eyes of Jewish Child Survivors from Poland: Family\, War\, Identity and Nationhood is expected in May 2026. \nShattered Liberation\, co-edited by Joanna Michlic\, PhD\, Nina Paulovicova\, PhD\, and Anna Cichopek-Gajraj\, PhD\, is available at Purdue University Press\, Bookshop\, Amazon\, and your local bookseller. \nThis is a companion event to HBI’s art exhibition\, Who Will Draw Our History? Women’s Graphic Narratives of the Holocaust\, 1944-1949\, at the Kniznick Gallery\, January 27 – April 30. \nWant to explore Jewish women’s lives through new and thought-provoking literary fiction\, memoir and more? Want to connect first hand with those who create it? The Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series\, dedicated in honor of our beloved Conversations and Baltimorian friend\, Sandy Silberman\, z”l\, brings us together to share stories that explore the diversity of Jewish women’s experiences across the world from yesterday and today. SUMMARY:Night of the Living Grateful Dead
DESCRIPTION:People sometimes say\, “Music is my religion\,” or that “Music is the language of the Divine.” Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir\, of blessed memory\, have often been called prophets or philosophers\, and countless people once called Grateful Dead shows their church (or shul). \nJoin Third Space at Shaarei Tfiloh for an intoxicating night of conversation and music with Rabbi Steve Schwartz and local musician Cris Jacobs. Rabbi Schwartz and Jacobs will take the bimah to discuss themes of spiritual identity\, lyrics as sacred text\, and the ways in which inherited wisdom can accompany a person throughout the many trials and tribulations of their lives. \nThere will be stories shared\, reflections of tours and memories over the decades\, readings of favorite Dead lyrics and plenty of renditions of the speakers’ favorite tunes. \nRabbi Schwartz is the senior spiritual leader of Pikesville’s Beth El Congregation and a longtime fan of the Dead. So is Cris Jacobs\, a popular local singer-songwriter known for his work with his former band\, The Bridge. Named one of Rolling Stone’s “10 New Country Artists You Need to Know” in 2017\, Jacobs has collaborated with the Grateful Dead’s Phil Lesh (who passed away in 2024) and Dumpstaphunk’s Ivan Neville\, and earned opening slots on tours with Sturgill Simpson and Steve Winwood. \nJoin Third Space for this special event and remember that the first days are the hardest days\, don’t you worry anymore. \n
