SUMMARY:Film Shul\, Jews and the Movies
DESCRIPTION:The film industry was started primarily by Jews who had emigrated from eastern Europe and settled in big cities like New York and Chicago\, supporting their families by dealing in everything from clothing to food to jewelry. \nTransfixed with the flourishing of nickelodeons and storefront theaters in the early years of the 20th century\, interests for a number of them shifted to the entertainment business. Soon\, some made their way to Southern California\, where they opened the large-scale motion picture studios that became Paramount\, MGM\, Warner Brothers\, 20th Century Fox\, Columbia and Universal. \nDiscover the fascinating story of how men like Adolph Zukor\, Carl Laemmle\, Louis B. Mayer\, Harry Cohn and others began Hollywood with their ambition\, ingenuity and keen instincts.

SUMMARY:Sandra Seltzer Silberman HBI Conversations Series Featuring Lea Taragin-Zeller\, author of "The State of Desire: Religion and Reproductive Politics in the Promised Land”
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, Israeli state policies have attempted to dissuade Orthodox Jews from creating large families\, an objective that flies in the face of traditional practices in their community. As state desires to cultivate a high-income\, tech-centered nation come into greater conflict with common Orthodox familial practices\, many Jewish couples are finding it increasingly difficult to actualize their reproductive aims and communal expectations. \nIn “The State of Desire”\, Lea Taragin-Zeller utilizes interviews to provide an intimate account of the delicate balance between personal desires and those of the state. Taragin-Zeller takes the reader beyond Orthodox taboos\, capturing how cracks in religious convictions engender a painful process of re-orientating desires to reproduce amidst shrinking public support\, feminism\, and new ideals of romance\, intimacy and parenting.
