SUMMARY:What Jews Think - Ideas of God in Jewish Mysticism
DESCRIPTION:In this session\, we will explore the varied\, fascinating\, and inspiring ways in which Jewish mystical thinkers and practitioners have understood and described the nature and character of Divinity. \nDrawing on lyrical and symbolism-infused texts from the Kabbalah of 13th century Spain (especially that of the Zohar)\, the Kabbalah of 16th century Tzfat\, to that of the spiritual masters of modern eastern European Hasidism\, we will study such ideas as: the Ein-Sof (No End or Infinity); the sefirot as the inner luminous dimensions of God‘s self\, the emanations of a river of heavenly divine light and breath; God as the ultimate fountain of pure compassion/Rahamim; the monistic and pantheistic — the radically immanent — vision of God as the interconnected life force of all Being.

SUMMARY:Travel with Us - Jewish Egypt
DESCRIPTION:Over the course of our virtual tour we will be time travelling: From the time of Moses\, through to the Golden Age of Egyptian Jewry\, and right up to present day Jewish Egypt. \nWe will visit an Egypt that was tolerant and open\, yet indigenous and traditional\, where Jews and their Muslim neighbors lived harmoniously\, and extended\, multigenerational families lived seemingly safe and joyous existences. We will be journeying through world history and Jewish history (and some of my own family history)\, and along the way we’ll stop at some of the most iconic Jewish sites in Egypt. \nWe will remember what was – and maybe what can be again someday.

SUMMARY:Former Host Rhea Feikin to Return to MPT's 'Chesapeake Collectibles'
DESCRIPTION:On Monday night\, Jan. 8\, at 7:30\, the premiere of the 11th season of Maryland Public Television’s popular series “Chesapeake Collectibles” will be broadcast on MPT-HD and available on the MPT livestream. This season’s 13 weekly episodes — following a three-year pause in production — returns with a fresh look and a treasure trove of captivating finds. \nRhea Feikin (File photo)\nThe season opener will feature the one and only Rhea Feikin\, former “Chesapeake Collectibles” host\, who brings a treasure of her own for evaluation on the program. \nThe Baltimore-born Feikin\, known as “the First Lady of MPT” due to her long association with Maryland Public Television\, retired in March of 2020 after more than a half-century on Baltimore’s airwaves. \nAlso on the episode\, a thrift store find is revealed to be a piece of White House china from 1891. Historian and social media influencer Evan Woodard shares one of his latest finds. An ornate\, monumental clock impresses an appraiser. And one of the first Apple computers designed and built in 1976 by company founders Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak is revealed to be the single most valuable item to ever appear on the show. \nOne of MPT’s most successful flagship series\, “Chesapeake Collectibles” showcases items from around the world brought to the show by individuals from across the DMV region.  During each episode\, passionate collectors have their unique\, vintage and collectible possessions evaluated by expert appraisers\, who reveal fascinating facts about each item’s history\, provenance and value. \nThe upcoming season features a broad range of treasures including a pair of vintage Air Jordan sneakers\, memorabilia related to the sinking of the Titanic\, a hat owned by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini\, the personal collection of a NASA astronaut\, an original Barbie doll and a ceremonial sword from the Pacific Islands. \nThe season’s 13 episodes of “Chesapeake Collectibles” will be broadcast on Mondays at 7:30 p.m. immediately preceding the acclaimed PBS series “Antiques Roadshow.” Viewers can also find full episodes of the series on MPT’s online video player and the PBS App. Encore broadcasts of episodes air on Saturdays at 8:30 p.m. on MPT2 and the MPT2 livestream. \nNearly 1\,000 guests attended the “Chesapeake Collectibles” season 11 taping event\, which took place last June at the Irene and Edward H. Kaplan Production Studio on MPT’s Owings Mills campus. \nFor information about the series\, visit chesapeakecollectibles.com.  The website also features the new Talkin’ Collectibles blog\, found at mpt.org/blogs/chesapeake-collectibles/. \nMajor funding for season 11 of “Chesapeake Collectibles” is provided by Alex Cooper Auctioneers\, Inc. and the generous members of MPT.

SUMMARY:BJC Welcomes Times of Israel Senior Analyst Haviv Rettig Gur
DESCRIPTION:Join the Baltimore Jewish Council for a virtual conversation with Haviv Rettig Gur\, senior analyst at the Times of Israel\, on Thursday\, Jan. 18 at 11:30 a.m. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA year ago\, the debate between Israel’s government and its judiciary over the nature of its democracy began\, leading to months of division and mass public protests. Following the horrors of October 7\, those issues receded into the background as the country united behind the shared goals of defeating Hamas\, rescuing the hostages held in Gaza\, and preventing a multi-front war. \nYet 2024 began with Israel’s Supreme Court justices\, in a narrow 8-7 decision that the reasonableness law passed by the Knesset over the summer undermines Israel’s democratic character and asserting 13 to 2 the court’s right in principle to strike down Basic Laws. \n\nWhat is the significance of these rulings?\nAs the war with Hamas continues\, how much attention have they received?\nHow likely is it that the debates over Israel’s judiciary will resume and the divisions reemerge?\nOr has Israel simply moved on?\n\nJoin the BJC for a conversation about all this and more as Haviv helps us understand the impact of the Supreme Court’s decision.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZoom link will be sent upon registration.
