House Bill 661 is the culmination of a collaborative effort led by Del. Sarah S. Wolek (D-16th) of Montgomery County, Del. Jared S. Solomon (D-18th) also of Montgomery County, and Sen. Shelly L. Hettleman (D-11th) of Baltimore County.

Hettleman and Solomon are co-chairs of the Maryland Legislative Jewish Caucus.

The objective of House Bill 661 is to spotlight the contributions of Muslim and Jewish Marylanders while promoting celebratory and educational activities in communities across the state. The bill now moves to Gov. Wes Moore for his signature.

“At a time of world tension and strife, this bill provides an opportunity to celebrate Maryland’s Muslim and Jewish communities for their cultural contributions to our state and our nation,” said Hettleman, who led the bill in the Senate.

Del. Jared S. Solomon

Solomon said the bill promotes dialogue and unity. “Given the times we’re living in, working on this bill together — and ensuring it reflects an expression of unity — is essential,” he said. “There is far more that unites us than divides us. It sends a clear message: we are stronger when we stand together, and progress is best achieved not in isolation, but through partnership and mutual respect.”

Said Wolek: “Commemorative months are a fantastic way for us to uplift and highlight minority communities in our state. Our Muslim and Jewish Marylanders have seen an increased amount of hate and discrimination in recent years. This bill creates space to learn about their rich history, traditions, and contributions as we work to build communities that are welcoming, connected, and respectful.

“Maryland is a stronger and more vibrant state because of its Muslim and Jewish residents.”
