Ricks was inspired to start Vital Sign after seeing her grandmother, who lived with dementia, treated “as a task, instead of a human being.”
When Ricks became a nurse, the picture was similar.
“I witnessed families struggling to navigate the system, seniors being overlooked, and caregivers who were doing their best, but lacked proper support, guidance, and compassion-driven training,” says Ricks. “While medical care was being provided, the emotional and human side of caregiving was often missing.”
Years later when Ricks experienced a stroke, she developed an even more profound understanding of what her clients were up against.
“I know what it feels like to suddenly depend on others for help, to have a strong mind trapped inside a body that isn’t cooperating, and to fear what losing independence really means. My lived experience allows me to connect with Vital Sign’s clients and families in a way that goes far beyond skills or training. It’s rooted in compassion, respect, authenticity, and humanity.”
