A lifelong member of Cumberland’s Jewish community, Doug Schwab was recently elected to serve a three-year term on the MPT Foundation’s board of directors.

Schwab currently serves as president of Cumberland’s historic B’er Chayim Congregation. In addition, he is a board member of Mountain Maryland Trail, the citizens’ group which maintains the Maryland portion of the Great Allegheny Passage from Cumberland to the Mason Dixon line.
A self-employed technology specialist, Schwab, 71, worked for three decades as vice president of technology for the S. Schwab Company and Ralph Lauren Childrenswear.
As a community activist, he chaired Cumberland’s Downtown Development Commission and helped lead the Western Maryland city’s Baltimore Street revitalization project in 2024.
During his decades of service to the Boy Scouts of America/Scouting America, Schwab received the Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver, Shofar, and Woods awards.
He is a 1976 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Science, now known as Thomas Jefferson University. He lives in Cumberland with his wife of 45 years, Betsey Hurwitz-Schwab.
In addition to Schwab, the MPT Foundation elected to its board of directors:
- Dr. Cynthia J. Boyle, professor emeritus at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy and current president of the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy;
- Chris Fenger, a veteran cable industry executive who most recently served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Astound Broadband;
- Daniel M. Freeman, an expert on constitutional law and congressional procedure, and author of the memoir “The House Was My Home: My Life on Capitol Hill and Other Tales” (Cadmus Publishing);
- and Irwin Kramer, managing partner of the Reisterstown-based litigation firm Kramer & Connolly, specializing in defending attorneys in disciplinary proceedings and representing bar applicants in character and fitness matters.
