Baltimore Jewish Council to Mark Kristallnacht Anniversary

November 9, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
A synagogue in the German town of Eisenach after Kristallnacht

On Thursday evening, Nov. 9, the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht will be observed by the Baltimore Jewish Council with a talk by Dr. Ann Millin, distinguished visiting professor of Holocaust Studies at Stockton University in New Jersey.

Dr. Millin, a former historian at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., will talk about the history of book burnings that took place in Nazi Germany 90 years ago and the correlation to today’s book bans in American schools.

This program will be offered virtually and in-person at 7 p.m. at Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, 7401 Park Heights Ave.

Kristallnacht was the “night of broken glass” on Nov. 9-10 viewed as the precursor to the Holocaust. Rioters destroyed 267 synagogues throughout Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland. More than 7,000 Jewish businesses were damaged or destroyed, and 30,000 Jewish men were arrested and incarcerated in concentration camps.
