Howard County to Observe Holocaust Remembrance Day

For its annual Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) program, the Jewish Federation of Howard County will present “Stumbling Stones to Remember: A Loved One Lived Here” at the Oakland Mills Meeting House, 5885 Robert Oliver Place in Columbia.
At the program, WBAL Radio reporter/anchor Robert Lang will interview Ellicott City resident Judy Gartner, a participant of The Stolphersteine Project, which commemorates individuals (and/or their family members) at exactly their last place of residency before falling victim to Nazi terror. The memorial effort has placed more than 100,000 stones in 30 countries.
In 2023, Gartner and her sister, Susan Oberfeld, traveled to Berlin for the laying of “stumbling stone” in memory of their grandparents, Friedrich and Ella Weiler, who died in Treblinka.
The Columbia program will also include survivor testimonials, a Holocaust artifacts display, a candle-lighting ceremony, musical selections and student essay winners. For information, visit jewishhowardcounty.org/yomhashoah.
