On Thursday, Aug. 10, from 1 to 4 p.m., Wellpoint Maryland, the state’s second-largest managed care organization, will team up with Weekend Backpacks, a local nonprofit that provides meals for food-insecure families, to provide school supplies to homeless children in Baltimore. This volunteer event will take place at 1505 Bedford Ave. in Pikesville.

Weekend Backpack strives to provide resources to vulnerable youth to help facilitate success and overall life improvement. Every new school year presents challenges for families struggling to pay for school supplies. Those who are homeless are particularly in need. Without supplies, students are less likely to achieve academic success. Several Wellpoint associates and volunteers will be present at this event to help stuff backpacks for the youth in need.
