The Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School gym was packed. The seats were filled. The crowd was going crazy. It was 23-22, and BT was in the lead when sixth grader Miles G. of Krieger Schechter Day School stepped up to the free throw line. The game was on the line. To pull away from rival BT, he needed to sink his final three free throws.
Heading into winter break, a heartbreaking loss would put the purple boys B basketball team in a poor state of mind for both the break and the remainder of the season. Miles took a deep breath and shot. He missed the first shot. There was a mix of cheers and disbelieving groans. The referee took the ball and passed it back to Miles. He took another deep breath and shot. He made the second one. The crowd went wild. It was tied, 23-23, but now it was all up to the next shot. The crowd watched as Miles’ perfect shot rolled around on the rim and bounced in, and the crowd erupted. Miles did it. He pulled his team ahead, 24-23, but the game was not over yet.
BT got the ball back and took it down the court. The shot missed, and KSDS got the rebound. Jonah Z., the point guard, took it down the court but got trapped at half court. He then made an incredible pass to Jackson M., another KSDS sixth grader who then made a lay-up to secure the win, 26-23. Thanks to the effort of the team and the late-game heroics by Jackson and Miles, KSDS came out on top.
Overall, it was an incredible game that has kept fans excited, even three months later. Without a doubt, it was an intense and close match between these longtime rivals. The BT players should be proud of the way they played; the game could have gone either way.
“It was a big night for both schools, and both teams fought hard ‘til the end,” said Shannon Cohen, KSDS athletic director. “Our boys came together and pulled [out] a victory.”
With the season completed, BT will have to wait until next year for revenge. KSDS went on to have a strong season with some additional wins, as well as a few losses, ending with a record of 6-4.
