In a statement, the Maryland Young Republicans organization recently announced it will dissolve the charter of the Harford County Young Republicans because of an anti-Semitic email allegedly posted by leaders of that chapter.
“The Maryland Young Republicans dissolve the charter of the Harford County Young Republicans effective immediately,” the statement read. “Tonight, we learned that their chapter leadership distributed a hateful, Anti-Semitic email to their listserv. This is in direct violation of Article IX, Section 2 of the Maryland Young Republicans Bylaws, which prohibits any type of discrimination based on race, color, sex, national origin, or religious belief. More importantly, such rhetoric and hatefulness have no place in our organization, and their actions are not reflective of our Republican values.
“Effectively immediately, we are establishing a new Harford County Chapter naming Anna Dove and Lindsey Reynolds as acting co-chairs. We are confident that their leadership will charter a new, inclusive, and successful path for the Harford County Young Republicans.”
In video posted on Facebook, Dove, who serves as chief of staff for Del. Michael J. Griffith (R-35B), condemned the email as “incredibly disturbing, anti-Semitic, racist content. … It is despicable that the leadership of the Harford County Young Republicans allowed such a disgusting email to circulate, espousing ideas that the members of its club do not ascribe to. We do not believe in anti-Semitism. We do not believe in violence. We do not believe in racism. We do not believe in discrimination. We do not believe in incivility. If you believe in any of those things, you do not have a place within our club.”
Griffith, who represents Harford and Cecil counties, posted on Facebook, “This email does not represent the beliefs of the Republican Party, of Harford County residents, or of myself. I strongly condemn this disgusting statement.”
Howard Libit, executive director of the Baltimore Jewish Council, praised Maryland Young Republicans for taking a strong stand against the email.
“Antisemitism has no place in our political discourse,” he wrote in an email. “I appreciate the swift and decisive response to condemn this material, dissolve the chapter, and appoint new organizational leadership.”
