For its annual Holocaust Remembrance Day commemoration this year, Howard County’s Jewish community will present Dr. Steven Luckert, senior program curator at the Levine institute for Holocaust Education at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

At the virtual gathering from 6 to 8:15 p.m. on Thursday, Apr. 8, Luckert will speak about “Keeping the Promise of Never Again and What It Means in 2021.” The event will be presented by the Howard County Board of Rabbis and the Jewish Federation of Howard County.
The pre-event at 6 will feature an online Holocaust artifacts exhibition from local community members, Holocaust survivor video testimonials, a local authors’ book gallery, the Holocaust Museum’s traveling exhibit “State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda,” and “Never Again” student essay winners from Howard County schools.
The commemoration’s memorial service will begin at 7 with a candle-lighting ceremony, followed by Luckert’s keynote address.
A Silver Spring resident who grew up in Binghampton, N.Y., Luckert served for 20 years as curator of the museum’s acclaimed permanent exhibition, “The Holocaust.” In addition, he curated eight special exhibitions, including “State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda.”

In addition, the Baltimore Jewish Council will present its annual Yom HaShoah commemoration virtually this year. The prerecorded event will feature Stephanie McMahon-Kaye, who served as an educator at Yad Vashem, Israel’s national Holocaust museum and memorial, speaking about the exhibition, “They Say There Is A Land: Longing for Eretz Yisrael During the Holocaust.”
The program will premiere on Sunday, Apr. 11, at noon on the BJC’s website and social media platforms. It will include include remarks from Sen. Benjamin L. Cardin (D-Md.), and recognition of teachers and survivors committed to ensuring that the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten.
