Brett Cohen
CEO

Kitchen Saver

Brett Cohen was never supposed to be the CEO of a kitchen remodeling company. In fact, he was planning to become a rabbi. But his father-in-law Andy Snyder, Kitchen Saver’s former owner, kept asking him to consider a career with the company. Eventually, Cohen agreed to try it for a couple of years.

“I literally started in the warehouse and worked in all different parts of the company. “After a year and a half went by, no one talked about it. I kept on working … If you had told me 20 years ago that I’d own a home improvement company, I would have said you were crazy!”

To his surprise, Cohen loved what he was doing. He took over the company, established in 1984, in 2013. In the last few years, Kitchen Saver has grown by leaps and bounds.

“We’ve really exploded in the Mid Atlantic Region,” Cohen says. “We serve all of Maryland, Washington D.C., and Northern Virginia all the way to Fredericksburg.”

A major part of Maryland Kitchen Savers’ business is custom cabinet renewal which is an upgraded version of cabinet refacing.

“Frequently, people have good cabinets and they’re happy with their kitchen layout,” says Cohen. “But sometimes there’s a few things they want to change. We can give the kitchen a facelift by putting new doors and door fronts on, replacing drawer boxes, and adding soft close features. People may want a couple of new cabinets or a new pantry cabinet and we custom build them inhouse.

“Kitchens are the heart of the home. Our vision is to make beautiful spaces for people to gather.”

Cohen seeks to create a “five-star experience” for his customers. I tell people, ‘I can make you happy with your kitchen. Your therapist is there for everything else.’”

Though he has no plans for a second career as a rabbi, Cohen says his Jewish values “dictate the way I operate my business and my life.”

That includes the way Cohen treats his staff.

“I don’t want people here to feel like they’re just employees. I want them to feel a sense of ownership — like a family member.”
