Tomorrow night on the 85th anniversary of Kristallnacht — the “night of shattered glass” in Germany and Austria considered the precursor to the Holocaust — members of the local Jewish community will gather at Baltimore City Hall for a vigil to mourn those who died during the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel and to pray for the 240 Israelis held hostage by the terrorist group.
The Nov. 9 community vigil, organized by Jay Bernstein, Israel committee chair at Ner Tamid Greenspring Valley Synagogue, will be held from 5:30-6:30 on the lawn in front of City Hall, at N. 100 Holliday Street.
The vigil will feature a display of 240 LED-illuminated paper lanterns as attendees pray for the release of the hostages and recite the names of every captive.
Mayor Brandon M. Scott and all members of the Baltimore City Council have been invited to the gathering.
The Oct. 7 Hamas terrorist attacks left 1,400 dead, more than 5,000 injured and 240 held hostage, and is considered the single deadliest day in contemporary Jewish history since the Holocaust.
