You could say that Isabella Blankchtein is on the move.

Literally … and constantly.

A senior at Pikesville High School, Isabella was recently selected for the Baltimore County Public Schools All County Honors Dance Ensemble.

The ensemble is comprised of high school students who perform at different local school events and galas, as well as on BCPS TV.

Among the gatherings will be the BCPS All-County Honors Dance Ensemble Gala Concert on Monday night, June 9, 2025, at the George Washington Carver Center for Arts and Technology in Towson.

Isabella, 17, who is a member of Beth Tfiloh Synagogue, is the first Pikesville High student ever selected for the ensemble.

Jmore: Have you always been interested in dance?

Isabella: I always enjoyed dancing around the house and putting on shows for my parents. But I never wanted to take a class until I got to middle school and it was an elective option.

Then, I enjoyed becoming better at something I loved doing.

I am now happy that I took that class in seventh grade as it has given me so many fun opportunities and memories since.

How does it feel to be the first student from your school selected for the ensemble?

It is very exciting. I am proud that I was able to achieve something that hasn’t previously been done by any of my peers.

How many students are in the ensemble?

There are 30 students in the ensemble, and I believe about 40 auditioned.

What does becoming part of the ensemble entail?

Being a part of the ensemble entails weekly rehearsals as well as performances at events such as the BCPS Dance Festival and Carver’s gala performance.

What kind of a commitment is it?

It is an hour-and-a-half rehearsal once a week, as well as a few performances. But it is also important that I find time to practice at home.

What is it about the art form of dance and fluid movement that you love so much?

I love getting to move my body and express myself in a way that is different than words. If I find myself doing homework and not able to concentrate, I will get up and dance. It gives me a way to get out my energy and focus better.

Your parents are known in the community for their instruction and advocacy of the Israeli self-defense system known as Krav Maga. Did that in any way influence your love for dance?

I think it gave me an appreciation for different ways that you can move your body. When I was little it was kicks and punches, but now it’s turns and leaps.

Do you personally practice Krav Maga?

I took classes until I was about 10, then I assisted with kids’ classes for a few years. But not much anymore.

What kind of music do you personally enjoy?

I mostly listen to pop music. Not to sound basic, but I am a big Taylor Swift fan.

Besides being a Swifty, what are some other activities you’re involved with in your spare time?

I am involved in my school’s musical, which I am dance captain of for the third year. I am also a member of four different national honor societies. I am president of the math and science ones.

Would you like to become a professional dancer someday?

I do not want to become a professional dancer, but I also want to keep doing it in some way. I don’t want to ever give it up completely.
