Andrew Holden Sober is remembered as a young man with “an easy smile” and kind disposition who loved competing in sports, playing with his dog and strumming a guitar.

A Cockeysville resident and Dulaney Valley High School sophomore, Andrew, 16, died on Thursday, May 7, nearly a week after being involved in a single-vehicle accident in Baltimore County that also claimed the life of 18-year-old Ryan Duvall, a Harford Community College student. Two other local teenagers were injured in the accident.

The collision took place late Friday night, May 1, when their 2016 Toyota Prius struck a tree at the intersection of Poplar Hill and Merrymans Mill Roads near Cockeysville. The cause of the crash is under investigation.

Andrew worked at Regal Hunt Valley Cinemas. At Dulaney High, he was a member of the soccer and track teams and played for Northern Baltimore United Soccer Club.

He also was a wingman with Athletes Serving Athletes, a nonprofit that empowers individuals with limited mobility to participate in mainstream running events, and served as an officer in the Chesapeake chapter of BBYO Baltimore Council.

“Andrew’s presence, leadership, and spirit touched so many in our community, and his loss is felt deeply by all who knew him,” BBYO posted in a tribute.

On the website of Sol Levinson & Bros., his family wrote, “Andrew will be lovingly remembered for his passion for playing guitar, his fondness for watermelon and bathrobes, and the special bond he shared with Greta, the family dog,” his family wrote on the website of Sol Levinson & Bros.

Posted North Baltimore United: “Our NBU family is heartbroken over the loss of Andrew. He was a valued teammate, friend, and member of our community, and the impact he had on those around him will never be forgotten. … We hold Andrew’s family close in our thoughts and prayers during this unimaginable time.”

Andrew’s family wrote that his organs would be donated. “We take great comfort that Andrew’s final act of kindness was to donate his vital organs to save multiple lives,” his family stated.

Andrew is survived by his parents, Karen and Bryan Sober; his sister, Sydney Fay Sober; and his grandparents, Laura and James Reiser and Arlyne and Dr. Julian Sober, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
