Dr. Alfred B. Rosenstein, Pediatrician, Dies at 85

A beloved community pediatrician for more than five decades, Dr. Alfred B. Rosenstein passed away on Tuesday, May 12.

The Pikesville resident and Beth El congregant was 85.

Dr. Rosenstein was known by scores of local families for his gentle disposition, wise medical counsel, calm demeanor, kind smile and distribution of kosher lollipops to his young patients.

“Dr. R. cared for our children as if they were his own and they adored him,” posted the Wolfish family on the website of Sol Levinson & Bros. “He really has a special place in our hearts. The expression ‘They don’t make doctors like that anymore’ doesn’t really apply — they never made doctors like Dr. Rosenstein. He was one of a kind.”

A Baltimore City College graduate, Dr. Rosenstein received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1965.

He was affiliated with several hospitals in the area, including Greater Baltimore Medical Center and the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai.

“He was a dedicated pediatrician for more than 50 years and devoted his life to his patients, their families, and the community,” wrote his family.

Posted Merissa Winepol: “Dr. Rosenstein was my pediatrician for 22 years. His gentle presence touched so many lives and is one of the reasons I decided to go into health care. I saw his bedside manner and kind demeanor with patients beside myself and [it] made me realize that I wanted to be that kind of physician with my future patients. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.”

Dr. Rosenstein is survived by his children, Dr. Andrew (Michele) Rosenstein, Marc (Jill) Rosenstein, and Eileen (Sean) Koplow; his sister, Janice Steinberg; his grandchildren, Jamie Rosenstein, Adam Rosenstein, Tyler Koplow, and Aiden Rosenstein; his step-grandchildren, Connor Koplow, and Lila Koplow; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and family.

He was predeceased by his wife, Marilyn Ruth Rosenstein (nee Kurland), who passed away on Friday, Apr. 17; his parents, Anne and Aaron Rosenstein, and his brother Stanley.
