Allan T. Hirsh III, a longtime community leader, businessman, entrepreneur and leadership advisor, passed away on Friday, June 5.
The Northwest Baltimore resident and longtime Baltimore Hebrew Congregation member was 77.
A lifelong Baltimorean, Hirsh was a graduate of Baltimore City College. He attended the University of Virginia, where he was an All-American lacrosse player.
Hirsh was the owner and CEO of Ottenheimer Publishers, a multi-generational family publishing business founded in 1890 by brothers Isaac and Moses Ottenheimer that operated for more than a century; and Hospitality Services Inc., a commercial food service design firm.
In addition, he was the founder and executive leadership advisor of Allan Hirsh Advisors, a business consultancy group that started in 2012.
Hirsh was also president of the American Book Producers Association, a national trade group.
Among the community organizations and boards to which Hirsh devoted his time and expertise were the Baltimore Jewish Council, Black Jewish Forum of Baltimore, the Baltimore County Commission for Aging, and the Union for Reform Judaism.
“His commitment to service and leadership was evident in the many organizations he supported, including serving as president of the Hebrew Free Burial Association, past resident of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation, and past president of Suburban Club,” his family wrote on the website of Sol Levinson & Bros. “Through his dedication, generosity, and vision, he left a lasting impact on countless individuals and institutions throughout the Baltimore community. … A lifelong Baltimorean, Allan took great pride in his hometown and the community he helped shape throughout his life.”
Hirsh is survived by his children, Jessica (Scott) Normington, Alison Hirsh (Jon Green); his siblings, Helene (Jeffrey) Waranch, Ellinor Hirsh (Christopher Finch); his grandchildren, Lindsay Normington, Charles Normington, Elyse Green, and Theo Green; and his companion, Mary Lou Carlson.
He was predeceased by his parents, Eleanor (E.B.) and Allan T. Hirsh Jr.
Services will be held on Sunday, June 7, at 1 p.m. at Sol Levinson’s Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road in Pikesville. Interment at Baltimore Hebrew Cemetery, 318 Berrymans Lane in Reisterstown.

The family will be in mourning at 2509 Baublitz Road in Reisterstown immediately following interment, with services on Sunday evening. On Monday, the family will receive visitors after 1 p.m., with services in the evening. Tuesday shiva will continue at 1 Slade Avenue, Apt. 302, in Pikesville, with services in the evening.
