Timonium Native Spencer Horwitz: MLB Debut is ‘Everything I Dreamed Of, Times 10’

On June 18, Timonium native Spencer Horwitz made his Major League Baseball debut with the Toronto Blue Jays against the Texas Rangers.

Horwitz, who in 2016 graduated from the St. Paul’s School for Boys in Brooklandville, says the dream of making his big league debut didn’t compare to the reality.

“The dream didn’t do it any justice. It was everything I dreamed of, times 10,” said Horwitz, 25, on PressBox’s Glenn Clark Radio broadcast on June 26. “It was the atmosphere, being there with my family, all the emotions. It was unbelievable.”

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound first baseman was called up to the Blue Jays from the club’s AAA-affiliate Buffalo Bisons on June 16, but didn’t appear in the first two games of the team’s three-game series against the Rangers. Horwitz admitted he had some nerves, which really began to set in when he found out he was starting in the Sunday finale. Then came the anticipation of stepping into a big league batter’s box for the first time.

Horwitz swung at the second pitch he saw, a four-seam fastball from veteran Rangers right-hander Jon Gray, and cracked it into right field for his first career hit. Horwitz gave the ball to his brother, Ben.
