Former longtime Baltimore resident Murray Elliot Schulman passed away on Monday, Apr. 21. The Silver Spring resident was 98.

A native of the Bronx, New York, Schulman proudly served in the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division, also known as the “Screaming Eagles.”

For more than a quarter-century, he was the owner and operator of L&S Food Market, a corner neighborhood grocery store in Northwest Baltimore. He was affectionately known as “Mr. Mike” by his customers, and “is remembered for his warm heart, helping hand and unwavering support for those in need,” his family wrote on the website of Sol Levinson & Bros.

After selling the grocery, Schulman, who had a lifelong passion for animals, managed the Advanced Veterinary Hospital in Reisterstown.

“He not only helped oversee the business but also offered compassion and support to countless pets and families,” his family posted.

Schulman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Harriet Leikach Schulman; his sister-in-law Shirley Isaacs; his sons Lewis Schulman (Nancy) and Dr. Allan Schulman (Elana); his grandchildren Noah, Corey, Ben, Jack, Anna and Austin; and his great-grandchildren, Adeline and John.

He was predeceased by his parents, Nat and Jessie Schulman, and his sister, Doris Shiffman.

“He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Murray lived a life marked by love, service and generosity,” wrote his family. “Those who knew Murray will remember his kind spirit, quick wit, hearty laugh and deep joy he brought to those around him. His legacy of love, laughter and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.”

Services for Murray Schulman will be held Thursday, Apr. 24, at 1 p.m. at Sol Levinson’s Chapel, 8900 Reisterstown Road in Pikesville. Interment will be at Beth Tfiloh Cemetery, 5660 Windsor Mill Road.
