Dr. Hezi Yeheskel Brosh, an associate professor in the department of languages and cultures at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, passed away on Friday, Oct. 25.

The resident of Arnold, Maryland, and congregant of Temple Beth Shalom in Anne Arundel County was 78.

A native of Israel, Brosh was a longtime educator, scholar, researcher and author who taught Arabic and Hebrew in multiple educational institutions in the Middle East and across the United States, including at Temple Beth Shalom.

He authored numerous papers, articles and textbooks, as well as teaching materials.

Among Brosh’s seven published books were “Arabic Stories for Language Learners: Traditional Middle Eastern Tales in Arabic and English” (Tuttle Publishing), “Salamaat! Learning Arabic with Ease” (Tuttle Publishing) and “The Reality of Arabic in Israel: Classrooms in Conflict” (University of Toronto Press).

Brosh, who received a doctor of philosophy degree from Tel Aviv University, taught at the Naval Academy since 2008.

His specialty was second language acquisition and sociolinguistics, with a focus on Arab pedagogy and curriculum development

“A devoted teacher, mentor, and author, he was a true people person, beloved and loving, humble and modest,” his family wrote on the website of Sol Levinson & Bros. “A unifier and peacemaker, he connected hearts through kindness and selfless giving. Above all, he was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose family was the center of his world.”

Posted Arnold residents David and Cindy Fox: “Hezi was such a wonderful dedicated person who we will truly miss. Several years ago, we were at an AIPAC session in DC and there were a group of Midshipman sitting in front of us. I asked them if they knew Hezi and I will never forget their response: ‘He is my favorite professor at the Academy.'”

Hezi Brosh is survived by his wife, Sarit Brosh; his children, Shani Brosh (Nadav Hayman) and Rahn (Teresa) Brosh; his sister, Limor Hefez; his grandchildren, Shira Segal, Rotem Segal, Raphael Brosh and Nina Brosh; his brother and sister-in-law, Hanan and Ilana Palmor; and his step-grandson, Ido Hayman.
