Author Liza Wiemer to Speak at Local Schools for Holocaust Remembrance Day
In honor of the observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the Jewish Library of Baltimore will present award-winning author and educator Liza Wiemer on Jan. 27-28 at four middle and high schools across the Baltimore area to discuss her 2020 novel, “The Assignment” (Delacorte Press).
Wiemer’s visit will take place at Pikesville High School, Gilman School, Maryvale Preparatory School and Ohr Chadash Academy. The initiative seeks to educate students about the Holocaust, antisemitism, and the importance of standing up against hatred and bigotry.
“The Assignment” is based on a real-life incident in 2017 when a high school teacher assigned students to argue for “The Final Solution.” The novel explores the moral courage of two students who speak out against this assignment, sparking intense conflict and resistance. Themes of antisemitism, discrimination, hate groups, and the role of media and institutions are at the heart of the book.
Wiemer, who lives in Milwaukee, will also return to the Baltimore area in April for Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) observances. Schools interested in hosting Wiemer for future visits can reach out to the Jewish Library of Baltimore at jewishlibraryph@jewishlibrarybaltimore.org.
