If you’re like many women, you tend to play it safe when it comes to cosmetics. We all have our go-to eye shadow and lipstick shades and that’s totally fine. But sometimes, it’s fun to branch out, be a little daring and step out of our beauty comfort zones. This month, beauty expert Ariel Lewis encourages us to take risks, experiment and try new shades and techniques.
Smoky Eyes

Tired of the same old ho-hum eye shadow shades? Mix it up with this up-to-the-minute look. It’s super versatile and is the perfect complement to the autumnal hues we associate with the season. Here’s how:
Step 1: Start with a neutral shadow primer to prepare your eyelids.
Step 2: Use trending fall colors such as warm magenta, brass orange or berry plum on your eyelids. Pair it with a brown shadow on the outer corners for a soft smoky finish. Ariel recommends Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance and Urban Decay Naked Heat eye shadow palettes.
Step 3: Add a dark brown shadow to the lower lash line to accentuate lashes and make the eyes appear bigger.
Extra tip: Make eyes the focal point of your face by keeping lips nude.
Vampy Lips
To make your lips the focal point of your face, try some of the darker lip colors so popular this fall. Whether you’re headed to a Girls Night Out or celebrating a special occasion, this look is sure to turn heads.
Step 1: Exfoliate and moisturize your lips to assure a smooth and long-lasting application.
Step 2: Line your lips with a color similar to your natural lip color and fill them in completely.
Step 3: Apply a shade like berry, deep red, purple or plum over the lip liner. Wear a matte lipstick for extra impact. Some of Ariel’s favorites include: Bobbi Brown’s Plum Brandy, Lancôme’s Le Pourpre, Sephora’s Fresh Berries, and Dolce & Gabbana’s Dolce Jealous. On a budget? Try these: Maybelline’s Plum, Please, Revlon’s Black Cherry, NYX’s Transylvania and Milani’s Dearest.
Step 4: Blot and reapply lipstick to ensure staying power. Then, line the outside of your lips with foundation to prevent lipstick from bleeding.
Extra tips: Complete your look by applying a lightweight foundation such as BB cream and a rosy shade of blush. Apply minimal eye makeup, using brown liner around your lash line. Go easy on cheek contouring when going for a bold lip. Instead, opt for a soft matte bronzer around the cheekbones. Highlighting your cupid’s bow will make upper lips appear full and sensual.
