For as long as he can remember, Democrat Tony Fugett has “been working to improve the quality of life for citizens of Baltimore County.”

Now, Fugett, 69, is running to replace incumbent Baltimore County Councilman Israel “Izzy” Patoka (D) of District 2.

As someone who has lived in District 2 for more than 30 years, Fugett, who works for the Maryland Department of Budget and Management, a former IBM executive, entrepreneur and past president of the Baltimore County NAACP, believes he understands what’s needed to improve the large and diverse area.

Fugett’s priorities include promoting business development.

“People on the Liberty Road corridor are saying that they have no major drug stores or grocery stores inside the Beltway,” he says. “They see their neighborhood as a food desert. All people in Baltimore County should have access to medicine and fruits and vegetables.”

Fugett is also concerned about public safety. The candidate supports a police accountability board separate from the police department. He also believes in recruiting officers that reflect the diversity of the community.

Fugett knows that home ownership is an important part of maintaining vibrant neighborhoods. “I will work to ensure that everyone has the right and the ability to receive fair and equal access to housing that is decent, safe, sanitary and within their budget,” he says.

“All children in Baltimore County should receive a quality education,” Fugett says. That begins with compensating teachers fairly for the critical service they provide.

“Teachers should be paid in accordance with their value,” says Fugett. He will work with the Stadium Authority to ensure allocation of hundreds of millions of dollars to support increased teacher pay, career and technical education programs, and afterschool programs.

Fugett will promote the use of clean, renewable energy for home and business owners.

A past president of the NAACP in Baltimore County, Fugett emphasizes the need for a more diverse and inclusive community.

“I believe that when you have diversity and inclusion, it makes us a much better, much stronger, much more productive community.”
