About The Speakers:

rabbi shalva

Rabbi Benjamin Shalva specializes in spiritual and hospice counseling, meditation and mindfulness instruction, and Jewish music, and serves as Rabbinic Support Consultant for Gilchrist and as faculty for the Soul Center. Rabbi Shalva is the author of two books of nonfiction: Spiritual Cross-Training and Ambition Addiction, both published by Grand Harbor Press, and has written poetry and prose for publications including The Washington Post, Image, Awakenings Review, Peauxdunque Review, Ponder Review, and Spirituality & Health Magazine. He lives in Pikesville, Maryland with his wife, Sara, and their children, Lev and Avital.

Suzanne Havrilla

Suzanne Havrilla, PT, DPT, Board Certified in Geriatric Physical Therapy, is the Director of Home Support, the private duty division for the Johns Hopkins Home Based Division. She received her BS in physical therapy from Old Dominion University and her clinical doctorate from Utica College. A Geriatric Clinical Specialist, certified by the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialists, Suzanne has over 25 years of experience treating geriatric patients in their homes. She also manages the rehabilitation services for adult home health patients and works with multiple teams across the health system on process improvement and program development. In addition, she manages a research into practice program (CAPABLE) and oversees memory care services in the private duty division, based on the research framework of the MIND at Home study.

Kevin Heffner

Kevin Heffner, MAGS, has served as President and CEO of LifeSpan Network since March 2017. LifeSpan Network is the largest senior services provider association in the Mid-Atlantic, representing more than 300 senior services provider organizations. Prior to LifeSpan, Heffner served as Director, External Relations, with UMBC’s Management of Aging Services Program/The Erickson School. Before joining the Erickson School, Heffner served as Executive Director of The Beacon Institute, the Educational Affiliate of LifeSpan Network, from its founding in 1997. In addition, he co-hosted WCBM’s weekly radio program, “Focus on Seniors,” from 2003 to 2006. Heffner has a BA in Communications from McDaniel College and an MA in Management of Aging Services from UMBC.

Dr. Mirza

Dr. Ziad K. Mirza currently serves as the Chief Medical Officer at MVS Woundcare & Hyperbarics. He received his medical degree from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon and completed his residency in internal medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore. With almost 20 years of experience in the administration of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), Dr. Mirza is board certified in both hyperbaric medicine and internal medicine. He also holds certifications as a Physician Executive and a Medical Director for Long-Term Care. Dr. Mirza has been recognized as a “Top Doctor” by Baltimore Magazine from 2014-2020. Dr. Mirza also serves on the board of the National Institute of Health.

Steve Gurney

Steve Gurney founded Retirement Living SourceBook in 1990. Drawing from the experience of observing his family caring for his aging grandfather, he created a comprehensive publication to help others in the same situation. In 1998, Gurney sold his company to The Washington Post where he served as general manager of SourceBook and the Senior Living Solutions Division. In 2019, he reacquired the resource and re-branded as Positive Aging Sourcebook. Gurney also founded ProAging Network meetings and leads the DC Senior Resource Group providing important resources for senior-serving professionals. He received a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Old Dominion University and a Masters Degree from the Erickson School of Aging Studies at University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).
