Yes, it’s prom season once again, a time of dazzling tuxedos and opulent evening gowns, tasteful corsages and dashing boutonnieres, raucous dance moves, and other forms of merriment and mayhem.

But this year, the folks at Atrium Village took the traditional prom concept to the next level. The Owings Mills senior living community recently held what was billed as a “real senior prom” for its residents, many of whom range in age from their 70s and older and graduated from high school more than a half-century ago.

Among the festivities to get residents and staffers in the mood were “prom-posals,” festive decorations, dress shopping, limo rides, a photo booth, dance lessons and a “glam squad” to assist with attire selections. Of course, there was also a special prom meal and dancing (to music spanning the generations, including the aforementioned 1980 classic “Celebration”).

Dozens of residents reportedly didn’t have the opportunity to attend proms in their youth for various reasons, so a splendid time was had by all. (No reports yet on any after-prom antics.)
