When serious illness affects a dear friend or family member, it can feel like the world is collapsing around you.
Gilchrist’s Jewish Care and Support Program can make all the difference. Staffed by professionals who are well-educated about Jewish rituals and customs, the program provides sensitive, Jewishly informed assistance to Jewish patients and their families.
While Gilchrist is renowned for its top-tier hospice services, hospice is just one of many programs Gilchrist offers to its patients and families.
Additionally, Gilchrist provides specialized geriatric support for homebound older adults with serious illness.
“Gilchrist’s team of geriatric physicians and nurse practitioners visit patients at their homes or nursing care facilities,” says Rabbi Benjamin Shalva, Gilchrist’s Manager of Jewish Care, Support and Rabbinic Services. “Our social workers and rabbis reach out to them, providing a sense of being supported holistically – like they’re not alone.”
Gilchrist’s Counseling and Support Program provides emotional support to Jewish patients and family members throughout every stage of serious illness and bereavement. Gilchrist offers grief counseling, support groups, workshops and remembrance events such as the Honoring Holocaust Survivors and Their Families Program.
“Our team of rabbis recognize the unique needs that survivors may have,” says Rabbi Shalva. “We understand that there are pieces of their pasts they might not have been ready to share until now. Traumatic events can’t be undone, but telling stories and finding some peace at the end of life can be extremely valuable.”
