The Federation of Jewish Women’s Organizations of Maryland, in conjunction with Kappa Guild Inc., recently collected toys, books and art supplies for young patients at the Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital.

Founded in 1916, the Federation is an umbrella group of statewide nonprofit organizations and sisterhoods committed to leadership training, support of the Jewish community and advocacy of issues of major concern. It is the nation’s oldest Jewish women’s federation.

For seven decades, the Northwest Baltimore-based Kappa Guild has brought together women to improve the quality of care for critically ill children and children with special needs. From its inception in 1953, the guild’s purpose was “helping children in need,” a phrase that became its mission statement.

Among the organizations that benefit from the guild’s efforts are the University of Maryland Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Sinai Hospital’s Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital, and Mercy Medical Center.

Located at 1708 W. Rogers Avenue, Mt. Washington Pediatric Hospital is a 102-bed medical center that provides long-term care for children with complex health problems.

Founded in 1922 by medical social worker Hortense Kahn Eliasberg as the Happy Hills Convalescent Home on Poplar Hill Road in northern Baltimore City., MWPH is a joint affiliate of the the Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland medical systems.
