Last Sunday morning, Oct. 26, more than 500 community members — including families and caregivers — turned out for the 21st annual “Robert I. Damie Race for Our Kids,” which benefits the LifeBridge Health system.

Held at The Maryland Zoo, the event raised nearly $226,000 to support LifeBridge Health programming for children across the state.
Among those who participated were family members of Dr. Jennifer Ann Kierson, a neonatologist at Sinai Hospital who passed away in September of 2007 at age 34.

“This year’s race holds special meaning for our family as it marks 18 years since Jennifer’s passing,” said Dr. Kierson’s mother, Merle, alluding to the number’s valued place in Judaism. “Giving back to the hospital and program she loved is our way of keeping her spirit alive.”
“Team Jennifer’s Babies” was the top fundraising team at the race, raising more than $11,000.
The team, now in its 11th year, has raised more than $122,000 overall to support neo-natal intensive care unit families and physician education at the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai.

After the 5K and the Brent A. Rosenberg One-Mile Family Walk, attendees were treated to a post-race celebration with breakfast, games and family fun.
Among the LifeBridge-related programs benefiting from the race proceeds are the Center for Hope, The Family Tree, the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthodepdics’ Save-a-Limb Fund, and the Samuelson Children’s Hospital at Sinai.

If interested, people can still donate to the race for another couple of weeks at raceforourkids.org (click the “donate” button).
