Singers from the Baltimore HaZamir chapter will join hundreds of members of HaZamir: The International Jewish Teen Choir to perform at a gala concert on Sunday afternoon, Mar. 15.

The gala will be held at the Wu Tsai Theater, David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City.

Erika Pardes Schon serves as conductor of Baltimore Hazamir.

The annual HaZamir concert merges Judaism, community and spirituality with a variety of musical styles, including popular music and classic Israeli and Jewish-American selections, as well as pieces commissioned or arranged exclusively for HaZamir.

“This is a life-changing opportunity for these young people, as they express their Jewish identities through their love of music,” said Vivian Lazar, director of HaZamir: The International Jewish Teen Choir. “They build leadership skills and strong connections to peers from a range of backgrounds.”

Besides Baltimore, the international HaZamir choir is comprised of teens from 25 American chapters, including Boston, Cleveland, Detroit, Minneapolis, Long Island, Philadelphia, Silicon Valley, California, and Washington, D.C.

Among the seven participating Israeli cities are Ashkelon (Baltimore’s partner community), Beit She’an, Dimona, Hod HaSharon, Jerusalem, Ofakim-Merchavim and Yerucham.

Members from HaZamir Baltimore and HaZamir Ashkelon met on Zoom to discuss the upcoming performance. Singers from Ashkelon will visit Baltimore in the days prior to the New York concert, staying in local homes and learning about Jewish life in the United States.

Last August, 14 members of Baltimore HaZamir performed “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Oriole Park at Camden Yards in honor of the team’s “Jewish Heritage Night.”

Tickets for the concert are available at lincolncenter.org.
