Over the past week, much of the Baltimore region and the nation have been focused on the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge after the cargo ship The Dali struck the 47-year-old structure connecting Dundalk and Hawkins Point on the morning of Tuesday, Mar. 26.

Like many organizations, The Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore wants to help those in need in the aftermath of this tragedy. The federation announced on Monday, Apr. 1, that it has established a Key Bridge Emergency Fund.

Associated Key Bridge Emergency Fund

“As an organization that is dedicated to the vitality of the Baltimore community, we are deeply concerned about the short- and long-term impact of this tragedy on our city, county and state,” The Associated posted on social media. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the six men who tragically passed away. As the week unfolded, the impact of the Key Bridge’s loss became clearer. All reports indicate that the cleanup of the wreckage is complex and will take a very long time. Working with our community partners, including the State of Maryland, Baltimore County, Baltimore City and local philanthropic organizations, we have established a Key Bridge Emergency Fund.

“While the government will play a huge role in the cleanup and restoration, there is a responsibility in caring for the human toll of this tragedy.”

The fund will be directed toward financial and emotional support and housing for families of the victims; mental health support for the neighborhood, dock workers and emergency responders; assistance for the thousands of dock workers now unemployed; support for small businesses that largely relied on bridge traffic; and other communal needs that arise during the rebuilding phase.

One-hundred percent of all funds raised will benefit community efforts connected to the loss of the bridge.

“As a Jewish community, we must demonstrate our support for Charm City in her time of need,” The Associated posted. “May we go forth with strength, resolve and partnership in the wake of this enormous impact on our entire Baltimore region.”
