Originally choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon with music of Léo Delibes, and a libretto by Charles-Louis-Étienne Nuitter the ballet was first performed in Paris in 1870. The libretto is based on “Der Sandmann,” a short story by E.K.A. Hoffmann.

This year’s Baltimore Jewish Film Festival will again be virtual. But there is an upside. You can view festival offerings at your own pace. The festival opens with “Persian Lessons” in which a young man pretends to be Persian to avoid being murdered in a concentration camp. “The Spy Behind Home Plate” tells the true story of Moe Berg, a professional baseball player who became a spy for the U.S. Office of Strategic Services during World War II. And “Kiss Me Kosher” centers on the relationship between Shira, a young Israeli, and her girlfriend Maria, who is German.
