Jmore and The Ivy Bookshop will welcome a pair of Baltimore legends, Michael Olesker and Leonard “Boogie” Weinglass, for an evening of reading and conversation about Michael’s new book, “Boogie: Life on a Merry-Go-Round”  (Apprentice House Press). The event, hosted by Jmore, will take place in-person, on The Ivy’s back patio at 5928 Falls Road on Thursday, May 19 at 6 p.m.

Millions of movie fans first heard of the mischievous street character “Boogie” in Barry Levinson’s classic 1982 coming-of-age film, “Diner.”

But millions of shoppers might have known about him from the popular Merry-Go-Round retail clothing chain co-founded by Weinglass that extended across the United States.

Now, in “Boogie: Life on A Merry-Go-Round,” veteran journalist and Jmore columnist Michael Olesker tells the life story of Weinglass’s rise from  poverty and street fighting, to the pool halls and the late-night Hilltop Diner of Northwest Baltimore, to becoming a multi-millionaire businessman and generous philanthropist.

Weinglass is an only-in-America success story, and Michael Olesker is the perfect writer to tell Boogie’s story. He has known Weinglass for decades, and spent the past half-century chronicling the life and times of Baltimore as a columnist for The News American and The Baltimore Sun, as well as a nightly commentator for WJZ-TV’s “Eyewitness News.” This is Olesker’s seventh book.
