When Chava Hess-Udoff started her job with the Meals on Wheels Kosher Kitchen, she knew she wanted to improve the lives of others. What she didn’t anticipate was how much her clients would enrich her own life.
That’s because Meals on Wheels Kosher Kitchen offers more than healthy meals for those who are home-bound. Meals on Wheels staff and volunteers form meaningful relationships with their clients.
“My connections with my clients and their families run deep,” says Hess-Udoff, a nine-year veteran of the organization. “It’s very special.”
In addition to providing meals twice a day, Meals on Wheels helps clients to access benefits such as food stamps; pet food; and grocery shopping services. If a staff member or volunteer notices that a client is struggling, they will connect them with trained case managers who can get them the help they need.
Meals on Wheels is always looking for volunteers.
“Volunteers are the backbone of everything we do,” says Hess-Udoff.
Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland is proud of our longstanding relationship with the Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center and Hospital, where meals are prepared for our Kosher Meal program under OU Kosher supervision with a mashgiach (a rabbi who ensures that we meet the strictest requirements of Jewish dietary law) on site. The program meets the needs of even those who are most observant.
Prior to Passover, the kitchen is thoroughly cleansed of any leaven, and Kosher for Passover meals are served throughout the holiday.
